I just went back and check the specs of your computer and the other person's computer. Apparently, they are not exactly the same. While they are both BOHB-WAX9's, yours is version M1280 while the other person's is M1040. Sorry, but I did not notice that different earlier. Yours is the top one.

Code: Select all

Machine:
  Type: Laptop System: HUAWEI product: BOHB-WAX9 v: M1280 serial: <superuser required>
  Mobo: HUAWEI model: BOHB-WAX9-PCB-B2 v: M1280 serial: <superuser required> UEFI: HUAWEI

  Mobo: HUAWEI model: BOHB-WAX9-PCB-B2 v: M1040
    serial: <superuser required> UEFI: HUAWEI v: 1.42 date: 03/25/2022
I would guess the only difference is the CPU installed, but maybe somehow that is why your results are different?

Did you take a Timeshift snapshot before making the file changes? If so, revert back to it and try just adding the one missing file and not all of the files.

Do you have your install usb? Maybe you can copy the original files from there?

No, but I can download it again and re-install it, if that's the only way

We recommend keeping the install usb because it can be helpful when troubleshooting issues.

The package firmware-sof-signed installed the files which were originally on your system. I don't know if you remove the package and then re-install whether it would get you back to what you had originally, because I'm not sure how it would (or would not) view the files you manually installed. If your only option to get back to the "before" state is going to be re-installing then you might as well try removing and then re-installing that package to see if it works.

I don't have an LM21.1 install handy right now to check the package version with it, but I think firmware-sof-signed in Synaptic Package Manager was version 2.0?

That output now looks similar to what others with similar hardware are seeing. Unfortunately, most do not have any sound and the one person who does have sound is getting it through a bluetooth connection. (I don't recall if they said it was bluetooth speakers or a bluetooth headset).

We have reached the end of the line of my ability to help further. Please see this post for the options as I am currently aware of them.

If you find anything you want to try, I do recommend taking snapshots because they are a fast, easy way to get back to what you had before you began experimenting. Timeshift can be run manually and saved to an external drive. Here is the method I use How to Use Timeshift to Backup and Restore Linux Mint 19 Systems from USB Drive. (It works the same for LM20 and LM21.)

Sorry, no. I only have the ones I already suggested.

The 6.2 mainline kernel was released, but I do not know if it has fixes for this problem in it. (I think it does not.)

Others with sound issues on a different laptop (with a different sound card) have been testing the new mainline kernels as they have been released and so far there is no fix for their issue either.

I have not recently checked, but because you asked I went to the GitHub and found someone posted Drivers loaded successfully, but no sound yet, HUAWEI MateBook #4397 last week. I also see quite a few issues still open with the codec ES8336 tag on them. :(

However, the latest mainline kernel is 6.3.x so I don't know if a newer kernel might have what you need. If you want to try a mainline kernel, Here are instructions: Mainline – Another Tool to Install Latest Kernel in Ubuntu / Linux Mint

Welcome to the forum, quadring.

That is a different computer and not the one in this topic. Not all MateBooks have the same audio hardware.

Xubuntu is based on Ubuntu 22.04 which is the same base as Linux Mint 21 uses so that is already the same for you.

Linux-generic should already be installed on your computer. It's part of the kernel package.

They recommend using one specific 5.15 kernel (5.15.0-76) and removing all the rest (which makes no sense because the system only uses one kernel at a time anyhow so it does not matter how many kernels are installed).

So basically all they recommend doing is a standard install and use the latest 5.15 kernel because it worked for their model which is a different model than what you have. I don't see anything in the kernel changelog which indicates that kernel would work any better than the 5.15 kernel you already tried when you first installed Linux Mint.

I expect the 6.2 kernel to become available in Update Manager (through View > Linux Kernels) by the end of this month. Maybe that will help. (Or maybe it will give new messages that give us a clue as to what will help.)

The 6.2 kernel is available in Update Manager.
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 6.2 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
