No sound playback / flash video playback

Post by irvinehooi »

Hi guys,

I'm previously a Ubuntu 8.04 user and recently I've install Linux Mint 8. After successfully installed it to my PC, I found out that the audio playback no sound at all. And the player time slider bar is moving in a speed up mode (very fast). When I'm on youtube website, the movie can be played in FIrefox but with no sound as well. Can somebody help me on this problem ??
So I can play my collection of MP3 songs on my PC.

Just want to ask did Ubuntu 9.10 has this problem as well ??

Thank you in advance.

Hi, I've also tried to install Linux Mint 8 on VMwawre Workstation 6.5.3 and the result is still the same.
Linux Mint 8 on my PC have no sound at all. And the audio music playback is still the same as my previous post. No system sound at all (startup sound and etc...). The player time slider bar move very fast and there is no visualisation show on the screen. Even I already enabled the visualisation on the player preferences.

I've already done the system update on Linux Mint 8.

Can someone please help. Thank you very much.

Why this problem happen ?? Such a basic problem shouldn't happen on the release version of an Operating System.
For me, Linux Mint 8 can't provide me the real out of the box on playing those restriced media.

It is obviously the OS fault and not the hardware fault.

This happens now and then with different hardware and is one of the drawbacks of Linux - changes in kernel version, playing with new sound servers etc...
Take a look at the general solutions for sound

This topic contains links to all (?) the really good solutions for sound in Mint
If you have Intel HDA sound take a look here first
If you want more help please include lspci and which Mint you use
And don't forget to go through all your settings
Right click the speaker next to the clock and check settings as well as any other settings you may find and also open a terminal and start alsamixer from it
Also check in "Users and Groups" that "Use Audio Devices" is checked for you, it is not by default and it should not matter but anyway

You did not mention that you were running in WMware and you have pretty old hardware - in fact I'm a bit surprised that so old equipment has the power for that, but with a decent amount of memory...
You have an "Ensoniq" "ES1371" which is a Soundblaster 128 if I'm not mistaken
See if the driver is loaded

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep snd
You should get at least snd_ens1371 as an answer
And of course check the volume control for anything that's muted

Re: No sound playback / flash video playback

Actually previously I was installed Linux Mint 8 to my physical PC and it has sound problem. Luckily I still have another PC. So I tried to install it to VMware and do testing.
The hardware shown in the list is the hardware provided from VMware not my physical PC hardware spec. And also assign 1GB RAM to Linu Mint 8 virtual machine.

The below is the result for "lsmod | grep snd"

Code: Select all

snd_ens1371 22016 2
gameport 11368 1 snd_ens1371
snd_ac97_codec 101216 1 snd_ens1371
ac97_bus 1532 1 snd_ac97_codec
snd_pcm_oss 37920 0
snd_mixer_oss 16028 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 75296 3 snd_ens1371,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss
snd_seq_dummy 2656 0
snd_seq_oss 28576 0
snd_seq_midi 6432 0
snd_rawmidi 22208 2 snd_ens1371,snd_seq_midi
snd_seq_midi_event 6940 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi
snd_seq 50224 6 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_timer 22276 2 snd_pcm,snd_seq
snd_seq_device 6920 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq
snd 59204 14 snd_ens1371,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_seq_oss,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device
soundcore 7264 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 9156 1 snd_pcm
It seem that I have the 1 that you mentioned "snd_ens1371"

Sorry that it takes some time
Is the "physical sound card" the ensoniq or is that just what WMware is using
I have few solutions for Soundblaster (Ensoniq)
For the now more common Intel HDA sound there's a solution here
