Linux Mint 17 and 18 (cinnamon) keep freezing

Postby Thane of Fife » Sun Apr 16, 2017 2:19 am

Hi, I started Linux with Zorin distro - decided to move up to a more robust OS after getting familiar with Linux.

First I tried Mint 17 a few days ago, as that was the installation disc I had. Everything worked great until I realized my computer would randomly freeze.

I can still use mouse but screen is completely unresponsive. I tried a search but there are over 6,000 results for 'freeze' on this forum alone, and many more on Google.

Some describe the exact same situation as mine - can move mouse but nothing happens. Only thing I can do is a hard power down then turn back on.

Today I upgraded to latest version of Linux Mint 18 but this is still happening.

I couldn't glean any solutions from the other threads so is there a way to fix this? What diagnostics can I provide?

I'm still new to this so if there's anything to run, command line input, whatever, I'll need input on how to do it as well. Thank you.

I don't want to go back to Zorin or Windows 7 so I hope this can be fixed.

@ Thane of File

Does you machine have Nvidia graphic by any chance?
If so follow the steps in the release notes scroll down to solving freezes.
https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_serena_cinnamon.php
good luck.
If you don't have Nvidia then give us as much info about your machine as you can.

@ Thane of File

Maybe, the problem is related to AMD graphics card. Please refer to .......

Please generate an overview of your system like this:

- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);

- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;

- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

- Press Enter.

- Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Weak old graphics chipset.... Disable all visual effects in Cinnamon:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... n-Cinnamon
(item 6.1, right column)

Written for the Cinnamon in Mint 18.1, but (if I recall correctly) also useful for the older Cinnamon in Mint 18.

Had most turned off already, followed the rest of instructions to turn all off.

Will report back if any more freezes.

Try a kernel update: Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels
Install the latest kernel from the 4.4 series. Then reboot.

If that doesn't help, do a memory test (memtest) by means of the Mint DVD (hit the space bar during countdown) or by means of the relevant entry in the Grub bootloader menu. Let it perform one complete run (half an hour?), then abort. Does it show errors?

Updated from 4.4.0-21 to 72

There are two other updates that are not auto selected, linux kernel headers for development and linux firmware for kernel drivers.

Should I do those?

No. Only if the freezing continues, which might be solved by the firmware package.

Thanks guys but I give up. I'm just going to have to go back to a more stable distro.

Looks like this is a recurring problem for many people in Linux Mint so there has to be a bug or something improper somewhere. Hope you guys get it sorted.

You might still try the lightweight Xfce edition of Mint 18.1. Make sure that all visual effects are disabled in Xfce as well:

Thanks for the suggestion, am on Xfce now. Seems promising so far but we'll see.

One thread in common on cinnamon freezes was the fact I had chrome+flash running so am trying Firefox this time around.

Ran memtest - all a-okay there. Will post back if I encounter freezes here.

Thanks again, seems like that solved my problem. Also like xfce better than cinnamon.

Good to hear! :)

I also recommend my "10 things to do" list for Xfce:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... -mint-xfce

Currently, most of my machines are running Xfce again.... I'll give Cinnamon another shot when Mint 18.2 arrives.

Yes I had already discovered your site before this forum - looked up how to maintain ssd for linux on google and your site was first few results.

It's well done and has some great advice, again thank you. :)
