Laptop shuts down when resuming from suspend

Postby sneeze » Sat Jul 15, 2017 8:26 am

Hi!

My laptop automatically shuts down 20-30 seconds after resuming from suspend, does this mean that my hardware doesn't support suspend?

System info: Mint 18.1 Cinnamon 64-bit, Intel Core i5 3337U 1.80 GHz, Intel HD Graphics, 8 GB RAM, 240 GB SSD (Crucial_CT240M50).

Not to dissuade you in pursuing a solution, but in my personal experience, I've never had any OS be 100% successful with any form of suspend, hibernate, sleep, etc. Sooner or later, there's always an issue somewhere.

With that, and the fact that Linux boots quickly, I always shutdown.

Thanks for your reply Joe. The thing is that I'm trying to wipe my hard drive by using the hdparm command, but in order to do that you need to resume from suspend.

I'm not familiar with hdparm, or why it would require resume from suspend to wipe a hard drive. That said, for such things, I've always had success with DBAN.

It seems that DBAN doesn't support SSDs. On the website they state that "While DBAN is free to use, there’s no guarantee of data removal. It cannot detect or erase SSDs..."

SSDs are always going to be a challenge to erase securely. This page discusses some details, but also alleges that GParted and Ubuntu live media provide tools for doing accomplishing the task.

I'm sure there are other methods as well, but my experience with SSDs is limited at best.
