Unfortunately it looks like that thing is fried :(

The sizes of all the shown partitions is larger than the disks' capacity of 2TB.

You can try testdisk and see if it can decipher anything.

It's in the repos - sudo apt install testdisk

Otherwise it's gone.

Do you think trying Repair Filesystem under Disks
or
Attempt Data Rescue under Gparted

are worth doing??

I also wonder if there might be more success in trying under a Windows environment rather than Linux??

I was afraid it was a lost cause. I tried test disk last night, but I was not able to get into his hard drive since it was not mounted. I'll try it again but only the one partition is mounted.

If it wasn't a Linux partitioned ext file system, then yes - try windows.

If it was Linux partitioned then windows will not be able to do anything with it.

I guess you can try gparted and disks, but I wouldn't bet the ranch on them.

If it is a hardware issue, you are SOL. If file system is damaged, you might be able to recover data after file system repair. But it is not good when you cannot access SMART, that is more likely hardware.

It was a windows HDD.

I'll try gparted and disks next. Then I'll try a file system repair.

Just tried test disk again, and the HDD that comes up is the one in the computer.

You might be better-off with a windows recovery application since it is a windows partitioned disk.

When I got to Disks, click on the icon that looks like 2 gears, there are options that say check file system and edit file system, but they are not available to click on. Is this what you all said I should try?

Yes.
Looks like neither Gparted nor Disks can be of any help..

Off to a Windows environment & try a data recovery system.

PC Inspector File Recovery looks a likely candidate to me with what you have seen with Mint so far -
PC Inspector File Recovery goes further than many data recovery tools in that it will detect partitions that have been lost, even if the boot sector or file system has been damaged or deleted.

One of the first things I tried was test disk on windows. I'll try recuva and some of those other options. I may have tried some of those other programs but I'll give them another shot. I don't have a windows computer here, so I'll have to try them in the morning.

Thanks, I'll try that first.

I want to thank everyone for all the help. I don't think I have every received help like this before on a forum ever. I feel like you all helped me exhaust every option. I'll go back to windows and see if I can do anything but I think it is hardware failure.
