Multi Display Issue [ABANDONED]

Post by VVolfGar »

Just Updated to LM 21.0

After updating, and using the FN F10 key combo, the primary monitor shows desktop correctly, but the secondary monitor no longer displays anything (Black Screen). The Display applet shows the monitor is detected. Before the update, both external displays worked correctly.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Unless a higher up around here know more (feel free to chime in), you can restore to Mint 20.x with the Timeshift image you should have made prior to the update to fix things currently.

but honestly, what many around here would suggest... clean install as upgrades from one major release to another, can cause issues, like is apparently the case with you right now. since you said it was working okay on Mint 20.x, I suspect a clean install of Mint 21 will restore that to normal running order.

Thank you. I'll eventually do that. I'm currently waiting on some RAM from China to begin a new computer build, afterwards I'll reinstall on this laptop.

What does that combo do on your computer?

The inxi output seems to think a screen is attached to the HDMI port and it is active (on), there is a screen attached to your VGA-1 port and that screen is off, and your laptop screen (eDP-1) is attached and turned off. All ports are being used and none are empty.
Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Mullins [Radeon R4/R5 Graphics] vendor: Lenovo driver: radeon
v: kernel ports: active: HDMI-A-1 off: VGA-1,eDP-1 empty: none

The below is the info for the screen which is on.

On this laptop, it transfers the video signal to external devices.

So it's a mechanical toggle switch. It does appear it turned off the signal to your laptop and the signal is set for the external monitors.

Is the monitor connected using HDMI what you consider your primary display? (ie. the display which is black is the VGA connection?)

Rather than assuming this is an upgrade (LM20.3 to LM21) issue, I suggest creating an install usb with LM21 and testing a live session to see if the same things happen. It's possible the issue might relate to the change of kernel.

Try booting the install usb in both UEFI mode (the native mode of your computer) and the current Legacy BIOS mode you are using to see if there is a difference. That boot mode can make a difference on newer AMD graphics (one which use the amdgpu driver), but I do not know if the same is true for the radeon driver. You would have to re-install to change your current system to UEFI mode if it turns out that does make a difference.

So it's a mechanical toggle switch.
Not exactly, but close enough. I apologize for the delay in responding.

I will try booting into the install ISO later and will post my results. Current events do not leave me with a lot of free time to troubleshoot further. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me with this though. Thank you. :D

So, the laptop died.

Fortunately, I had just recently finished a new PC build. Just wanted to update you, and thank you for taking the time to help.

Thanks for the update. That might explain the issue. You can mark your issue [ABANDONED] instead of [SOLVED] so others know there is no solution here and you are no longer seeking help on this hardware. Please go to your first post in this topic and click the pencil icon to modify the title of this topic.

Hopefully, the new PC build is working well for you. :)
