Re: LM 21 Power Management - Screen does not turn back on

Post by daviddez »

Good news! I have done the upgrade again - and this time the problem has disappeared! Although there appears to be a slightly longer lag, the monitor comes back to life now, both with moving the mouse and with hitting the shift key.

Notwithstanding all of your great assistance (thanks for your time and efforts), it appears that it was either a quirk with my first attempt or it was solved through one of the "small regressions in Cinnamon" that have since been done.

Before closing this as solved, for completion's sake, I will add below:
1. The result from inxi -Gx once I was on LM21 as mentioned by SMG
2. A current "essential details" from LM21 as requested initially by hglee

Thanks everyone for your assistance - this forum and its contributors are the greatest!

Other than your system seeming to be quite warm, all looks good to me.

I talked too soon! Although during the day the monitor restarted as it should - this morning, after about 15 hours, it didn't. Even turning the monitor off then on caused only a "no input" notification for a few seconds. As before, only an "alt-ctrl-backspace" brought the monitor back to life. Guess that I have to live with it - but for the next week or so I'll reinstate this as not solved!

PS Thanks for highlighting that the temp is high - time to open up the tower and do a dusting - I haven't done it for a long time!

A "no input" notification is often an issue related to the monitor. Have you checked to make sure both ends of the cable are secure?

The next time you bring it back to life, run the following in a terminal

Code: Select all

dmesg -T | tail -n 200
Maybe it will give some clues as to why the monitor disconnects.

Re: LM 21 Power Management - Screen does not turn back on

Thanks once again!

1. The monitor cable looks good and since the problem did not occur while I was reverted to 20.3 but reappeared with 21 that is probably not the problem.

2. After needing alt-ctrl-backspace to revive the monitor, the second time that also didn't work - I had to physically reboot the computer!

3. I then set "Power Management" "Turn off the screen when inactive for" to "Never" - the "Suspend when inactive for" being "Never" at all times. Since then I used the physical power switch on the monitor to turn it on/off (BTW I leave my computer running 24/7 as I run BOINC) and had no problems turning it back on, including after having the monitor off overnight. So the workaround works.

4. As you requested me to run "dmesg -T | tail -n 200", I recreated the problem by resetting Power Management to 5 minutes, as it was before, and waited 3.5 hours. I needed to physically reboot. The output is in the next message.

Thanks again so much in addressing my minor problem.

Do you know if your system has the most recent BIOS?

This link must be a different GA-H61M-DS2 (rev. 1.0) BIOS than what you have because the numbers are different. But for it, there was an update in 2020 to Improve "NVIDIA graphic card compatibility".

Below is the output of xset 0 as requested.

I have done nothing to the BIOS since I got the machine in 2014 or so - and frankly I am quite hesitant to do it. This is my only computer. "If it's not broken, don't fix it" applies as my problem is minor, there is a workaround, and if a BIOS update fails and I can't recover, I may end up with a boat anchor!

Nonetheless, if you can convince me of its safety and instruct me on how to do it, there is a small possibility that I may risk it.

Thanks!!

The data from inxi indicates there is no product or version information for your hardware so I can not instruct you with any specifics. I presumed you would have documentation which would describe how to check for the latest BIOS and how to update it, if there is a newer version.

Machine:
Type: Desktop System: Gigabyte product: N/A v: N/A
serial: <superuser required> Chassis: type: 3 serial: <superuser required>
Mobo: Gigabyte model: H61M-DS2 v: x.x serial: <superuser required>
BIOS: American Megatrends v: F7 date: 03/23/2012

The DPMS for the monitor (shown in the xset output you posted) appears to be the same as the normal defaults.

I do not have any other ideas.

Re: SOLVED LM 21 Power Management - Screen does not turn back on

Thanks for your time and effort, and for sharing your skills and knowledge.

I'll just "suffer" with the problem. As it was introduced with LM21 and did not exist in 20.3, I'll test whenever there is an update on the chance that it will be resolved. Although I'll now once again mark this thread as "Solved", I'll document here if and when that occurs.

Thanks for your help - this is to just "close the loop".

In the weeks following this problem, my old desktop computer (10 years old and running 24/7) developed hardware problems that progressively got more serious. As noted its temperature was high and even after a good cleaning the fans were obviously no longer coping - hey, we all get old! I finally gave in and got a new desktop - all is well now so it appears that the problem, although it only appeared with LM21 was probably hardware or firmware related (my BIOS was really old). Another contributing factor may have been that my last fresh install was of LM18 - I was successful each time with the upgrade procedure provided (ie 18.3 to 19, 19.3 to 20, and except for this problem 20.3 to 21). This was preferable as my Home was on a separate partition on the same drive as the system.

Now I have a new machine, a fresh install of LM21 and all is well with Power Management working as it should. Thanks again!
