No suspend/hibernate now?

Post by ander111 » Thu Apr 19, 2012 9:59 pm

Hi guys,

I just replaced my son's dead motherboard with an ASUS P8H61-M LE/CSM mobo. We also took the opportunity to replace Mint 11 with Mint 12 (Gnome).

Everything works great except Suspend and Hibernate. When we try them, some system messages appear that are too fast to see, then the PC powers off. When we turn it on again, Mint reboots completely.

Do you have any ideas what we can do? I'll be glad to post the output of any commands here, if you'll tell me which ones.

Thanks – Ander

Anyone? I hate to leave my son's PC running all day, but it's not practical for us to shut it down and reboot it each time... Thanks for any clues with this!

I've now upgraded to the newest kernel for this version (LM 11) via:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Unfortunately it hasn't solved our power-management problems.

When we try to Suspend, the system turns off normally, but when we resume we get a scrambled screen.

Do you think this could be a video-driver or chipset-driver issue? Please, any clues how we may be able to fix this? There must be a standard procedure for determining the problem, right? Thanks!

Hi Ander111...

Just researching the suspend/hibernation issue at this moment, as I also have problems with these functions although different from yours. Recently installed Mint Maya 13 Mate and my ASUS does not have hibernate function at all and suspend gets stuck. Am just about to try out these solutions:

http://thecodecentral.com/2011/01/18/fix-ubuntu-10-10-suspendhibernate-not-working-bug

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=79634&p=464060&hilit=asus+u56e#p464060

Good luck.

Hi again,

I've now installed Mint 14 XFCE on my son's PC. Hibernation works, but he doesn't use it because it takes too long to resume—so I often find his PC running when he's not around. :?(

If Suspend worked, I'm sure he'd use it as it'd be much quicker. Unfortunately, when we try resuming from it, the display says "No Signal" and stays black.

I tried the fixes in the threads jaderiver pointed to, but neither worked. One of them says:
This might give you some clues on the suspend/hibernate issue:

Code: Select all

gedit /var/log/pm-suspend.log
...so I'll paste that info below. (It seems to think Suspend was successful, so I don't know if it'll help.)

If anyone has more ideas, we'll appreciate them!

Code: Select all

FYI ... I used to have to get "Suspend" to work on my computer using the codecentral.com solution. However, my Suspend function no longer needs this fix. My guess is that Mint Updater has taken care of this issue at some point, at least for my computer model. Hopefully you find a solution for your particular setup. :)

Well—as they say, that and $2 will get you a cup of coffee.
