Problems with CD Rom & DVD ROM

Post by crosenblum »

I have a liteon dvd rom drive + burner, and a cd-rom drive and burner.

Here is my fstab

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0
# / was on /dev/sdb6 during installation
UUID=5ca8643e-142a-4234-a7c6-10f596bc8d6c / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
# swap was on /dev/sdb7 during installation
UUID=83c4172e-f49b-448f-bb65-237b8c3b84d9 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

The drive's do work 100% fine in windows, and do show up in bios. I have tried to switch the sata mode, from sata to either sata/raid/athci, I read somewhere that having the sata mode incorrect can cause problems.

I have 2 seperate sata controller's, 1 for the cd/dvd rom drives, and 2nd for the 2 hard drive's, altho one of the hard drive's uses an ide controller still.

my hard drive's are fine.

P.S. I would like to suggest that some post and sticky, a list of steps to take to provide whatever information that is needed to solve hardware problems, that way, we can go thru the checklist make sure you have all essential information, to solve problems.

I totally get how it can suck having to repeat yourself millions of times.

I really love linux, but i am having problems with the older hardware, and in this economy not easy to upgrade hardware cheaply.

Thank you.

Not sure why you posted fstab, it is not useful here. Please post output of

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -c disk

Ok, that certainly doesn't show any optical drives. You say you have 2 SATA controllers, are they both seen in the output of lspci? Are there any errors regarding SATA in the output of dmesg?

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -e error -e sata

Do you want me to re-run that dmesc thing?

I only see one SATA controller listed here? What are the optical drives connected to?

Re: Problems with CD Rom & DVD ROM

To a seperate sata controller. In bios, i can switch that sata mode into 1 of 3 modes, and that mode seems to affect the availability of the cd-roms in linux.

Sata, Raid or AHCI i think.

I have tried all 3 mode's and it doesn't seem to work in any.

I am able to manually eject, put in a cd/dvd, but the os doesn't seem to recognize it or allow me to mount it.

I have 2 sata controller's, one for hte hard drives, and another for the cdrom/dvd rom drives. Unless i am mistaken and it's an ide controlelr for the cd rom/dvd rom drives.

I apologize but i am not 100% certain.

I don't think the controller's and drive's are setup very wisely, when I upgraded my pc 2 year's ago.

Any suggestions?

If the SATA controller is not being recognised then the system won't see anything attached to it. You will need to change the mode to SATA or AHCI in the BIOS and see if there's any change in the output of lspci. What controller does Windows device manager say the drives are connected to, is this shown in linux?

It might be my own stupidity, i thought there was 2 sata controller's but it could be just one. I am not 100% sure.

I could open my pc again but it's really a pain in the ass to do it too often, all the cable's etc.

How could i check if i have an ide controller or not?

And how does the sata mode affect the availability of devices on the sata controller?

Thanks.

Finally got winxp to boot.

HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10L SCSI CdRom Device
SONY CD-RW CRX230EE SCSI CdRom Device

Both of these are the cd/dvd drives that are not working in linux/linux mint.

They work fine in windows. (Yes this is a dumb saying, but i had to say it)

What can i do, to get them working in linux mint?

Thank you.

Crosenblum, we need to know what interface these drives are on. In Windows device manager change the view to show devices via connection/bus or look in the properties and relate this to the output of lspci.

The Connection tree is:

PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
-VIA VT6410 RAID Controller
--HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10L SCSI CdRom Device
--SONY CD-RW CRX230EE SCSI CdRom Device

Does that help?

Ok have done a bit of searching and it seems this card just doesn't play with linux, ubuntu linux at least. There are several posts on the ubuntu forums going back to 2008 stating similar problems with this card, namely that drives attached to it are just not seen even though the card itself is. This being an add in card, there should be a setup available by pressing a hotkey at boot, you may want to investigate the way things are setup in that. Other than that the only suggestions I can make are to switch the optical drives to the other IDE connector on your systemboard or try a different card. Good luck.
