Applications dont play sound -- Mate 64bit

Post by pgmer6809 »

Hi.
I am running Maya 64 bit. Mate desktop. When I go into the sound preferences and do the speaker test, things work OK. I set the default theme in the sound config and now when I log in or logout, I get a little tone, so Maya/Mint knows about my sound.
But when I try to play an MP3 file, Totem runs but there is no sound. The sound control in totem is set to 100%. When I try to view a video from say YOutube in Chromium or in Firefox the video plays but I get no sound.

When I boot into Windows7, it sees my sound devices fine, it plays fine, and Firefox can play videos fine with the sound.
Any ideas?

Hello,
I'm not a sound expert at all but you could also look at esound, pulseaudio, jack (or since you seem to use KDE perhaps arts) ie soundservers that kind of "mask" your card, so all applications giving out sound will send to one of those programs and they will do the mixing and give output to the card itself.
Well it may be that they need dmix to work at all though - as I said, me no expert...
Good luck.
