[SOLVED] Medion 2312 - 6Gb not recognized

Post by breinbaas »

Hi everybody,

I just bought a Medion 2312 (12'' laptop with 6gb RAM and 1Tb hard drive) and I was thrilled that Linux Mint seemed to work instantly.. however.. if I look at the memory management I see that only 2 Gb of memory is recognized.

Is there something I can do to be able to use all of the 6gb?

This is the result of cat /proc/mem:

And the BIOS shows 2 slices of RAM 1x2Gb and 1x4Gb.. so there is 6Gb available.

Any thoughts on this problem?

Thx in advance,

32-bit OS cannot use 4GB or more by default. You can use 64-bit Linux or install the PAE kernel (linux-pae in Software Manager) to get around this.

Solved. Thanks.. Funny because I read somewhere that linux 32b, unlike windows 32b, was not bothered by 4Gb+ RAM. Guess I mixed up some information

Thx!

Sure, on Linux 32 you can get the PAE kernel which can use more RAM. You probably read about a distro that installs the PAE kernel by default.
