Hardware Support for Linux Mint

Postby codeTalk » Sun Mar 17, 2013 11:12 am

I'm new to linux mint - like complete newbie.

I'm looking to build a custom computer to run linux mint on.

I was wondering, does Linux Mint support Intel Core i7?

Are there brands on motherboards that are better than others in terms of compatibility with linux mint ?

What is the max ram Linux Mint supports?

I plan to run vulnerability assessments via Linux Mint - will require adequate processing/ram.

Thanks :)

See the hardware compatibility database over on the community website for checking specific hardware: http://community.linuxmint.com/hardware/welcome

Intel actively contributes to the Linux kernel, so yes an Intel Core i7 will be supported just fine. You only have to be careful of Intel's Atom processors, as some of the models for that use a PowerVR graphics core and the company supplying that does not support Linux.

As for RAM, Linux Mint supports 64 GiB RAM on 32 bits install (limited to 4 GiB per process) and in theory 16 EiB RAM on 64 bits install (16 EiB = 18 quintillion, 446 quadrillion, 744 trillion, 73 billion, 709 million, 551 thousand and 616 bytes).
