Best-supported laptop

Post by Pointedstick »

I'm looking to get a laptop and put Mint on it of course :) and I'd like the community's opinion on what's best supported. I'm okay fiddling with settings but would like everything to work eventually. Here's basically what I'm looking for:

- Hard drive and RAM upgradeable (not soldered onto the motherboard)
- Light (< 4.5 lbs)
- Not too expensive (< $1000)

What say ye?

Two things to watch out for would include:

A) the ability to disable UEFI and use BIOS instead.

UEFI is troublesome for linux at the moment so you need the ability to switch it off.

B) a single graphics adapter.

Most machines appear to come with hybrid video cards, which should be avoided if possible. If you can't find a machine with a single HD AMD/ATI, nVidia or Intel video then the better the specs of the Intel video the better because you'll have to switch off the HD card and use only the Intel.
