Installing Mint 15 on Toshiba S55t-A5238

Post by Dngrsone » Wed Aug 14, 2013 11:01 am

I bought myself a not quite top-of-the-line laptop, the aforementioned Toshiba S55t-A5238 with 12GB RAM, 1TB hard drive and Windows 8 preinstalled.

I managed to shrink the WIndows 8 Volume down, turned off Secure Boot in the EFI menu, and installed Mint 15 (Cinnamon) x64 desktop.

If I boot with Secure boot off, I get Mint. If I boot with Secure boot on, I get Windows. I installed rEFInd, but have not gotten it working yet; considering Toshiba has its own folder in the EFI/BOOT menu, I may have to copy the refind_x86.efi module to that folder. I haven't tried that yet.

Right now, though, my primary concern is the lack of wifi in the Mint installation. Apparently it doesn't exist, according to Mint, and of course Toshiba is being coy about providing details.

my lshw output is thus:

Code: Select all

$ sudo lshw -C network

Is this unclaimed Realtek network device my wifi module?

I will boot back into WIndows 8 and see if I can find some better information, but I will take any help I can get.

Have you plugged into your DSL Modem with an Ethernet cable and looked for drivers for your WiFi card under Mint yet? I had to do that with an older Dell 1521 that I had. It didn't see the WiFi but after I got a connection via plugging in I went to my Drivers Manager and checked the box for a proprietary driver then installed it and the WiFi started working fine. Give that a try and let us know how it went.

First place I went... nada.

It looks like I am running a Realtek RTL8188E PCI-e card; not supported by the current kernel in Mint 15 (that's what, 3.8?).

According to this bug report, there is support included in kernel 3.10 and up.

I guess that means I will have to install that kernel manually... how will I know when there is a kernel upgrade, though?

I installed kernel 3.10_am64 and got my drivers that way... tried 3.10.6 initially, but ended up breaking things, so I uninstalled and went for 3.10 instead and I am running on wifi now. DHCP (automatic didn't work out too well... setting a manual IP did, and that is fine by me.

For the record, I went to the repository Index of /~kernel-ppa/mainline, surfed to the folder I wanted, and downloaded to a folder (labeled /kernel 3.10) the following files:

linux-headers-3.10.0-031000_3.10.0-031000.201306301935_all.deb
linux-headers-3.10.0-031000-generic_3.10.0-031000.201306301935_amd64.deb
linux-image-3.10.0-031000-generic_3.10.0-031000.201306301935_amd64.deb

I then opened a terminal, typed in the following:

Code: Select all

cd Downloads
cd "kernel 3.10"
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
sudo update-grub
sudo reboot
After rebooting, I got a notification telling me wifi was available.

My next problem is getting rEFInd to work correctly with Secure Boot enabled. I had trouble getting rEFInd to work initially, but solved it by running their setup script from within Mint.

I have to sign certificates for Mint on my machine, and I need to learn how to do that before proceeding.

Well, managed to sign my Mint loader, but now I get a grub error...

Code: Select all

error: Secure Boot forbids loading module from (hd0, gpt7)/boot/grub/normal.mod
Seems like progress... I don't know.

Installed my printer, after some effort... had to install suld-driver-4.01.17 through synaptic to get my Networked Samsung CLX-3175 working with Mint 15.

I'm wondering if I need to build a new grub.efi with all the modules in it and then sign that.

Or do I even need a grub.efi if I am using rEFInd?

Well, with a little help from Rod Smith, I managed to get rEFInd to boot directly into Mint with Secure Boot enabled.

I moved a copy of my vmlinuz and related files to the /boot/efi/EFI/linuxmint folder and then digitally signed the vmlinuz file using OpenSSL as instructed here.

Then rEFInd can boot directly into Mint, bypassing grub and its attendant problems .

Now I get to play with the rEFInd configuration and clean things up.
