Suspend / Hibernate do not work / immediately resume

Post by Jester-x » Sun Nov 17, 2013 6:35 pm

Hello there!

I have recently installed LM 15 x64 (dual-boot with Win7 where LM has its own partition, i.e. there's no Windows installer for Linux involved). It's the first time I have Linux running on this machine and it's doing fine so far, alas, the suspend and hibernate functionality does not seem to work properly. Whenever I try to activate either of them, the display will go blank but immediately come back up, give me a login prompt and the machine will keep running.

I have a hunch that this problem could be related to the hybrid graphics built into the notebook: it has both an Intel onboard chip and a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card, as well as a hardware multiplexer to switch between the two. The multiplexer, however, does not seem to work properly and shows none of the led lights which, under Windows, would indicate which graphics solution is active.
Here's the output of inxi -G, if that's any help:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card-1: Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller
           Card-2: NVIDIA G98M [GeForce 9300M GS]
           X.Org: 1.13.3 drivers: (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) FAILED: nouveau,intel Resolution: 1366x768@59.9hz, 1366x768@59.9hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Mobile Intel GM45 Express Chipset GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 9.1.7
Apart from that, I'm not sure what other information might help to narrow down the problem. I'm still relatively new to Linux as a whole, so please feel free to tell me which additional information to retrieve and I'll try my best to do so. ;)

Best,
Jester-x

This seems a common problem out there. I have a similar problem on Mint 15/14/13 go figure my post "LM13 Mate goes into suspend (sleep) but resume righ away" on a Asus P5N-MX mother board. Have not got a response yet.

I also have suspend/resume problems with an Intel Atom D2700 mobo. I can do a

Code: Select all

sudo pm-suspend
and everything works fine but when done from the xfce power manager, it resumes with scrambled graphics. I have seen this with various mobo/GPU combinations.

You also have to have a dedicated Linux swap partition of a size greater than your amount of RAM in order to use hibernate/resume.
Main desktop: Debian GNU/Linux Jessie 64bit - MATE
(i5 2400@3.7GHz - 16GB DDR3 - HD6770 w/radeon driver - SSD+RAID1)
Safer than Dropbox

Got that already...no problem. I think I may have stumbled on the fix, though...in "Users and Groups", I made my account name a member of the group "users". I added a few other groups as well so some messing around here may be required (bad on me for changing more than one thing at a time). Anyhow, it works fine now.
