Scanning with Brother MFC 7860dw

Post by juicer »

I was able to get the printer working (wired and wireless) but haven't been able to configure scanning.
SANE website doesn't seem to be working to identify if this unit is supported but Brother site offers deb drivers.
XSane and simple scan don't find any scanning devices.

Are you in the scanner group?

Did you try as root?

I'm not sure what "scanner group" you are referring to HOWEVER after an entire day I stumbled on a fix copied below:

I am including the printer directions but as I said, ,my printer function was already working. I just used the bolded scanner instructions and it worked.

PRINTER
Install the deb files from the Brother site. Hopefully the other user posts will let you do it, but if you have Debian 32-bit it should just work like any other package.
1. You might have to install the pre-requisites mentioned on the Brother site and open up port 54925 (choose UDP) on your router's port forwarding. I don't know if they're really required, but I did do those things (well, many of them; I left a few out, like all that making of directories and running aa-complain. See this URL: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/before.html
2. Go to set up a printer and under the network printer part (I'm using a network printer, at work), choose AppSocket/HP JetDirect.
3. Put your printer's IP address into the host (port 9100). Might want to figure it out if you don't know it. You'll need it for the scanner, later on.
4. Select the Brother driver entitled MFC7860DW for CUPS, and choose the recommended one within that (the top one, for me).
5. Print the test page. Worked for me. Printer is done.

SCANNER
Now for the scanner. Your printer driver won't work. You'll need a separate scanner driver. Fortunately, the Brother site actually has one.
1. Go to this link:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/index.html
2. Click on Scanner Driver / Scan-Key-Tool
3. Download and install the deb files (brscan4 and scan-key-tool). I got the 32-bit ones, of course.
4. This is the tricky part. There aren't any instructions after that, and it still doesn't work. So, what do you do? Well, I don't know how, but somehow I figured out that brsaneconfig4 was a command-line tool that was just installed and that might help. So, I did some trial and error, and by some miracle eventually I found that the following command effectively set up my scanner:

brsaneconfig4 -a name=MFC-7860DW model=MFC-7860DW ip=192.168.1.185

Replace 192.168.1.185 with your own scanner's IP address (it's the same as the printer's, since it's the same device). The name and model is what the trial and error was on. I don't know if they're supposed to be that, but it works. So, I'm not complaining.

Anyway, then use Simple Scan (simple-scan) and it should find your scanner and be functional. xSane didn't really work too well for me, but I didn't try to get it to work that much on it—however it did locate my scanner.

Yup, it took nearly a day to come across that little line to be added. I just stumbled on it in another post. I wish I knew what I was doing but this was just dumb luck and tenacity.
I since installed the drivers (and that line) and got two other Linux Mint boxes up and running in twenty minutes.

Just when I thought I was in the clear, I find out that Duplex printing option is grayed out. Drats! It works fine on Windows 7 on same machine (separate HD disk).

Solved: retraced my steps and found that the driver "recommended" during install was 7840w and not the 7860dw. Changed to 7860dw cups and all is working now.
Thanks for listening ;-)

There is no brsaneconfig4 command on my machine even after installing the brother scanner drivers for linux.
I cannot believe the setup is this difficult.

I guess one does need to know where to look; but Brother do provide a How-To http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... edirect=on

the 7860 is a brscan4 model;

Brother give an example of the template style for a command from the terminal as
brsaneconfig4 -a name=SCANNER model=MFC-7860DW ip=192.168.3.3
..... if the ip address happened by chance to be ip=192.168.3.3 ..

_____________-

Brother provide an FAQ page for scanning http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... edirect=on

1) ensure libusb is installed ....... even if wireless!! ...... http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... =on#f00107
2) copy files http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... =on#f00101
so

Code: Select all

sudo cp /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother4.so.1.0.7 /usr/lib/sane
and

Code: Select all

sudo cp /usr/lib64/libbrscandec4.so /usr/lib
and

Code: Select all

sudo cp /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother4.so.1 /usr/lib/sane
3) install the udev rule http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... =on#u13.04

....... but if you use the install tool, I think it should do all of the above ................
