No sounds on headphones solved

Postby Mortal Light » Tue Jul 29, 2008 5:32 pm

I just installed Mint 5 and I realized that although sound comes from the laptop's internal speakers, my headphones are not detected when plugged into the jack; sound continues to play from the internal speakers and no sound is heard through the headphones. My computer is a Sony Vaio vgn-zx140e and my sound card is is part of the Intel 82801H (rev 03) chipset. I've looked around on several different forums and tried some of the fixes to no avail. Is this a common problem with this chipset? I am a noob, so any help would be much appreciated.

Yes this is confusing - it's no longer a switch in the connector that directs the signal either to speakers or headphones...
This is obviously a common error on laptops - either speakers don't get silenced or headphones don't get a signal or....
It has something to do with your ICH8 sound and there are a lot of suggestions for ICH and specifically ICH8 in the forum - but it's not easy to find a useful suggestion
The following is a general solution for ICH8

Code: Select all

gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

then add

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Instead of auto you can try Sony or vaio
I'm not saying this is the solution, but it could be
Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it

After changing "auto" to "vaio", the fix you recommended worked. Thanks for the help!
