Minimal system requirement for a specified Linux Mint?

Post by LU6FER »

Hello , I am sorry ,but I couldn't find my question solved among the ones that are already replied .

So = shortest version :
My Old but sturdy Laptop DELL Inspiron : Pentium 4 (32 Bits ; 2,6 Mhz ; 512 MB RAM ) .is Now fitted with a brand new Hard drive, but lies without any OS ;
Question : Which , among the Linux-Mint O.S. will do the best job ?
Or , will the Linux Mint 16 feel confortable enough with these datas ?
Thanks (plenty of )

I don't believe any of the Mint OSs will work on that.

I presently have LMDE Mate installed on a PM 1.2GHz laptop with 1.25GB RAM, but used the run the same machine with the same OS when it had only 512MB RAM such as yours. It was acceptable (to me), but had the need of swap space often.

Actually your specs are right on the minimum for most any of the 32-bit Linux Mint systems, and if you have a fairly fast HDD, might just be OK, but if you can bump the RAM up to 2GB you will have a more enjoyable experience.

Few month ago, before the hard drive of this Dell laptop went doomed , it was fitted with Linux-Mint 12, ans was doing fine .
But Mint 12 is slightly obsolete ,so I 'd like trying a higher number in the Mint OS .
Today's Mint is Mint 16 , . But if I can't be sure , I will instal the Mint-12 again .
Except the names of things which require to be learnt , it was running well .

Please Ed , what is LMDE ? Linux Mint something ,I presume , but what is " DE " ?

LMDE = Linux Mint Debian Edition
It's seems a little bit lighter and more responsive that the Mint Ubuntu editions. But if you prefer Mint Ubuntu, I would recommend Mint 13 since it's an LTS edition, and you can enable Mint 16 backports on it if you want.

I would give it a shot with XFCE 32-bit. XFCE is very lightweight. I don't see the system requirements but I would think Pentium 4 would be sufficient. My biggest concern would be 512GB RAM. Can you upgrade to 1GB? I think that would make a big different for you at a pretty minimal cost.

Mint 13 XFCE LTS could be a good option. It's not as light as Mint 12 LXDE but Mint 13 is supported until 2017.
