Problems Installing Catalyst/fglrx

Post by Marcus Law »

Hi, I'm having this issue with fglrx. When I install the drivers from the Linux Mint additional drivers software in the Settings Manager, and the drivers from AMD's website, Cinnamon goes into fallback mode. I tried switching to MATE, but the entire UI lags and is unusable. The drivers seem to be broken on both machines. I've had the drivers previously working in Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon, with the Linux 3.7 kernel.

Hardware Information:

Go to AMD site:

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Fill in the menues, start with Desktop Graphics and make sure
you select correct hardware.
At the bottom is a list 13.12 stable or 13.11 beta.

Only the 131.11 beta driver installed correctly for my on Mint 16 and Ubuntu 13.10
Make sure also before you start you have kernel headers installed, then extract the
download, make it executable and run it. It should build a catalyst driver for you.

You want the the latest beta driver, which is version 13.11.995, not 13.12 for that card. Don't expect great stuff from it though, because they've been a bit slow gettting support for the Volcanic Islands series working.
Problems? Tell us EXACTLY what you've done and what you expected to happen, IN DETAIL. That will save us questions, and we should get along better,

I have dysgraphia. This means I might have understood you incorrectly through no fault of my own.

Yeah, I'm aware on how to correctly install the drivers. I wouldn't have a bug with them if they weren't installed.

1- Download the driver in Downloads directory

2- Open Downloads directory, right mouse button on downloaded driver and choose 'extract here'

3- Right mouse button click in a blank space of Downloads directory; choose 'open in terminal'

4- With the open terminal, type 'ls' (without quotes), you will see the amd-catalyst driver.zip that you downloaded and the new amd-catalyst driver.run that you extracted. OK

5- sudo su (then enter your password for log like a root)

6- chmod +x amd-catalyst-13.12, etc.run (full name of the extracted driver)

A tip: begin to type the name of the driver: amd, and press TAB key to complete the correct name, to avoid name errors.

7- ./amd (press TAB key again)

The installation process will start automatically, generating a graphic user interface, with which it will be easier to continue the installation.

Attention;

Step 4 to 7 are in terminal.
