videos overheating laptop in cinnamon but not in windows 7

Post by slow »

Happens only when watching videos for 10 min or longer. e. with VLC or firefox.

it's a lenovo y530 with core 2 duo cpu and Intel mobile 4 integrated gpu. It's fairly clean inside and the fans seem to run fine.

If I put in a different windows 7 hard disk this does not happen. There is a lenovo power managment utility which appears to set the cpu to non max. It has balanced and power settings. I tried indicator-cpufreq which is a similar utility for linux; has not made much difference,

I installed powertop but am not sure how to interpret the results.

If anyone knows, here are the results

When I use mint or Ubuntu, I also noticed that my laptop heats more than with Windows (not overheating though).
I measured power consumption and saw that linux uses about 10% more power than linux.
I guess Windows handles resources and manages power better than linux.
