laptop toucpad, can't turn off tap to click

Postby edwinhubble » Sun Oct 05, 2008 9:31 am

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on a forum, but I feel like I've read every other post on this topic, and I still can't seem to solve my problem.

I've just installed Elyssa on my Averatec M1000 laptop, and I can't get the 'tap to click' off. Here's the synaptic section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Code: Select all

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier      "Synaptics Touchpad"
        Driver          "synaptics"
        Option          "SendCoreEvents"        "true"
        Option          "Device"                "/dev/psaux"
        Option          "Protocol"              "auto-dev"
        Option          "HorizEdgeScroll"       "0"
        Option          "TouchpadOff"           "2"
        Option          "MaxTapTime"            "0"
        Option          "TapButton1"            "0"
        Option          "SHMConfig"             "true"
EndSection

I added the last four options in attempts to turn it off, or at least to get Gsynaptics to work, but it doesn't. When I try to run the Gsynaptics touchpad setting tool to run on the desktop, it still tells me to add "SHMConvig" "true" to xorg.conf, which I've clearly already done. This leads me to believe that this particular xorg.conf is not being run, but I've checked all the searchpaths for loading xorg, and this is the only one. Am I missing something completely obvious? The only thing I can think to do is change the Device option, but I don't know what I should change it to. Here's the output of cat /proc/bus/input/devices:

Thanks, but I've already read that forum and tried everything on there. Playing around today, however, I was able to make my mouse not work by messing around with the other mouse setting in xorg.conf.

So here's my complete xorg.conf:

Code: Select all

Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier   "Generic Keyboard"
   Driver      "kbd"
   Option      "XkbRules"   "xorg"
   Option      "XkbModel"   "pc105"
   Option      "XkbLayout"   "us"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier   "Configured Mouse"
   Driver      "mouse"
   Option      "CorePointer"
   Option      "Emulate3Buttons"   "true"
   Option      "TapButton1"      "true"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier   "Synaptics Touchpad"
   Driver      "synaptics"
   Option      "SendCoreEvents"   "true"
   Option      "Device"      "/dev/input/event8"
   Option      "Protocol"      "auto-dev"
   Option      "HorizEdgeScroll"   "0"
   Option      "TouchpadOff"      "2"
   Option      "MaxTapTime"      "0"
   Option      "TapButton1"      "0"
   Option      "SHMConfig"      "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier   "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier   "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier   "Default Screen"
   Monitor      "Configured Monitor"
   Device      "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier   "Default Layout"
   Screen      "Default Screen"
   InputDevice   "Synaptics Touchpad"
EndSection

I was playing around and thought, "What if I mess with the configured mouse instead of the synaptics touchpad?" So, not knowing what I was doing, I changed the driver under configured mouse from mouse to synaptics, and added the "TapButton1" "0" that you see still in there. It obviously didn't fix my problem, but it did make my mouse not work at all, which leads me to believe that the X server doesn't think that I have a touchpad, but somehow interprets a tap as a click.

P.S. I just realized that I misspelled touchpad in the thread title. Now I'm a little embarrassed.

Sorry, you may notice that in the xorg.conf file I've posted above, it has "TapButton1" "true" instead of "TapButton1" "0", which makes a big difference. I have since changed it, and my problem is still not solved.

I did not even see that :)
Haven't got a clue - most of what I'd recommend is in the link I gave you

Hi,

I just ran into this problem myself.

In the "Autostarted Apps", you have to simply create a new startup daemon for Gsynaptics.

I believe it's "gsynaptics-init". Hit Add, then type that in as the command.

When you reboot, your changes should now activate.

Thanks Dapper, but that doesn't seem to help either. There's no clear autostarted apps anywhere in Elyssa, but I went to Preferences -> Sessions -> Startup Programs, and got a list of what appears to be autostarted applications. Looks like gsynaptics is already in there, along with the gsynaptics-init command. It's also got this -sm--disable option on there. Not knowing what it was, I removed the option and restarted, but that just made Nautilus not work, so I put it back on.

I took a look at this again and now I saw that you have (in xorg.conf)
Option "TapButton1"
as "true" in
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
and as "0" in
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
This seems a bit odd I think you should either have 0 or 1 or true or false not a mix
Try to set it as false instead of "0"
or for that matter as "1" instead of "true"

Thanks Husse, but that doesn't work either. The manual for xorg or synaptics (I forget which) says that true, on, and 1 are all equivalent, as are false, off, and 0. I changed them anyway, but with no effect.

Hmm - sometimes you can't mix 0 or 1 with true or false
I have to search better in the forum, I have a distinct feeling this has been treated here

Here's an explanation in German - I have not found a similar wiki in English

Ouch I recently posted something that might be a solution for you too but I write so many posts that I don't find it (if I use the option View your posts I get 123 pages)

Well that sucks. I've been working on it off and on, but I still can't find a solution. Let me know if you think of anything, but I'm starting to think I'll have to live with this tapping option on.
