SD card ejecting on a Thinkpad x61

My SD card mounts with no problem, but when I try to eject it I get: /usr/bin/eject: unable to eject, last error: Inappropriate ioctl for device. Do I need a permanent entry in fstab or something?

If I try to eject it a second time I get: Device to unmount is not in /media/.hal-mtab so it is not mounted by HAL.

It's mounted by pmount
This is what mounts removable devices unless they have an entry in fstab
There is actually a pmount-hal but that's another story
You find devises mounted by pmount in /etc/mtab
You say eject - shouldn't it be unmount?
With a a permanent entry in fstab you must be root to mount/unmount

It says eject, which makes sense for a SD card since you stick in it a slot, but doesn't make sense if it is treated as a disk. Anyway, any ideas about how to make it safelty "unmount/eject"?

Your error(s) seem a bit odd
You could try to use pumount - you need to install it first though
It's the umount of pmount
