Linux Mint 17 restarts after adding RAM

Post by lyros »

Hello,

I have a Dell Vostro 3500 with 3G RAM( 2G and 1G ). After switching the 1G stick to a 4G stick, I can't boot my mint (Linux Mint 17 Cinamon 32 bit), but my Windows 7 partition loads just fine.

Any idea of what may the reason be?

Thanks!

You upgraded to 6GB RAM correct? If so you need a 64Bit version of Linux Mint, the 32Bit versions won't work with more than 4GB of RAM.
So upgrading to a 64Bit Linux Mint version should help you.

strickly speaking - it should still work, but will only see ~3.1Gb ram. ..

unless - you can use the pae 32bit version of Mint.

- from the grub boot_menu - run the memory test program - check that it "sees" the correct amount of memory.

Thanks Pierre,

When I find time to keep a backup I will install the 64bit version.
