[SOLVED] USB Keyboard. mouse sometimes not recognized...

Post by gogolink » Thu Dec 18, 2014 7:37 pm

Hi, so I just installed Mint 17.1 Cinnamon (64 bit) alongside Windows 8 on a Dell Inspiron desktop, and everything seemed to be going fine -- until after I powered up the machine, hit enter at the mostly black screen with the boot options (so at this point, it did take input from the keyboard), and the log-in window appeared, I noticed that neither the mouse nor the keyboard were recognized (or powered on, for that matter). So the only option was a cold reboot (power button off and back on) -- and then it worked. Happened to me several times already.

Once I'm in, there's no problem with either the mouse or the keyboard.
Seems to me that it must be the USB ports rather than mouse or keyboard drivers.
I tried to plug the keyboard into a USB port on the front of the desktop, though, and that didn't help (still no input).

Any suggestions on this?

I already updated the Linux kernel from 3.13.0-37 to 3.13.0-40-generic.
The processor is an Intel Core i5-4460, the machine a Dell Inspiron 3847.

Any help would be much appreciated.

P.S.:
This may be the same problem that's discussed in this thread: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=185071

I wonder whether this is the same problem:

I'm on kernel 3.13.0-40. Update manager would allow me to upgrade to 3.16.0-28.

Is that worth a try, or do I risk too much?

I did upgrade to the 3.16.0-28 kernel, and so far have not had any problems with the USB ports anymore. I've only booted up six times since the upgrade, so I do not yet feel absolutely confident that the kernel upgrade took care of the problem. But I think it did. For now, I'm marking the thread "SOLVED."
