Switched HD Into Another Laptop, Nvidia Not Detected

Post by red-e-made »

Hey all!

I remember having this problem once before, but for the life of me can't remember how to fix it.

So when one of my HP laptops whitescreened on me, I took out its hard drive and put it in another laptop (an HP nx7300 to be exact). Everything works beautifully apart for the fact that it does not detect any nvidia at all. This is what the Driver Manager shows me, and this is what Nvidia X Server Settings shows me.

I realize that the two machines likely have two different graphics cards. However, lspci -v doesn't seem to even show the graphics card at all.

Code: Select all

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
That is Intel graphics, not Nvidia . . they do not provide proprietary graphics drivers, open source is your only choice. Check the following link to see if they have something for you.

Ugh ... I see. Well, time to poke around a bit on the linuxgraphics site and report back. Much appreciated!

EDIT: "Distribution not supported" is the error message I get when trying to start the Intel Graphics Installer. Which is weird, considering I installed it from a .deb file for Ubuntu.

Forgot to mention, the following terminal command will show you your graphics system and drivers being used :

Code: Select all

inxi -Gx

Cool, thanks. This is my output from that command:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card: Intel Mobile 945GM/GMS 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller bus-ID: 00:02.0
           X.Org: 1.15.1 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1280x800@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 945GM x86/MMX/SSE2 GLX Version: 1.4 Mesa 10.1.0 Direct Rendering: Yes
It would appear Mesa is the way to go here? Pardon my ignorance; I'm in completely unknown territory.

Did a fresh install over / and /home, still no change. Any WINE games are showing up garbled.

My graphics information is listed here, and help at all would be hugely appreciated, thanks.

If you are using Mint's Cinnamon desktop edition, it requires LOTS of graphics horsepower . . maybe try the Mate or Xfce editions ?
