inspiron 3847 unresponsive mouse at login screen

Post by msandefur03 » Wed Jan 14, 2015 1:08 am

I'm running LM17.1 Cinnamon 64 bit on a Dell Inspiron 3847 (Core i5, 12GB RAM). Starting with LM17, I have had a serious issue logging in to the system. About 2/3 of the time, the mouse/keyboard powers down just as I reach the login screen. I have no choice but to power down and try again. I can boot into Win7 with no issues. I had hoped the 17.1 update would fix the problem, but no such luck. I see others on this forum http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=185071 and the Ubuntu forum are experiencing similar issues with this same model computer. Any further suggestions appreciated!

Hi msandefur03, have you tried upgrading the kernel to 3.16? I had the problem you describe after I first installed Mint 17.1 on my Inspiron 3847, but since I upgraded the kernel to 3.16, I haven't had another issue of mouse-(or keyboard-)unresponsiveness.

gogolink, I think your fix may have done the trick. I just installed kernel 3.16.0-29 and the first boot was successful, with no freeze! (typically it was taking 3 tries to get in) I'll keep testing for another day or two and let you know if any issues crop up, but I'm optimistic. Thanks for the help!

Good news! After running the system for a couple of days, with multiple reboots in and out of linux, I have not experienced any problems - old or new :D
Thanks again for the help, gogolink!

I was having this problem also with my new Dell 3847 that I installed 64 bit Mint 17 Mate on.
With the 3.13 kernel I was having trouble with my wireless Logitech USB mouse and keyboard not working with about 30%-50% of the boots. They would be detected and work ok until the Mint mate login screen appeared then they'd go dead. I'd have to power off and reboot. Sometimes 3 or 4 times in a row to get them to stay working. It was REALLY frustrating! I installed kernel 3.16.0-30 using the update-manager/View/Kernels. After the installation I cold booted and Mint came up (booted) with the new kernel.
So far the new 3.16.0-30 kernel seems to have corrected that problem. :D

It also seems to have fixed the 80 second delay of "Restart" / "reboot". Now when I use "Restart" or "reboot" it is instant, no more 80 second delay before it starts rebooting. Yay! :)
