Linux Mint cinnamon 64 17.1 kernel panics on fresh install

Post by aleixrocks »

Hello!

I'm trying to fix a kernel panic issue. I have an acer travelmate 5720 laptop with a fresh install of Linux Mint Cinnamon 64 17.1. I have updated the laptop's BIOS to it's newest version (1.35) but I'm still having kernel panics.

When my laptop's native wireless card is on (I don't blacklist it in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf), I notice more frequent kernel panics related to it (on the RIP value I see it's driver name). This card is an PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection and it's driver is iwl3945. But anyway, when I blacklist it, I still get other kernel panics (see image). I have tried the most popular Linux distributions and I get the same error on all of them.

I have been dealing with this problem for more than a year and I have made it my personal project to fix it. I know the basics on compiling Linux Kernel's and I have made previously (time ago) some basic modules. Does someone have any idea of how to solve this?

try adding this to your kernel parameters.

Code: Select all

elevator=noop quiet splash
maybe try using a newer kernel?

I'm not a pro at solving kernal panics but I've experience them myself. I have a tri-boot system (all LInux). Of the three Linux distro's that I have, only one (Open Suse) has this kernal panic issue. I've Googled the issue and in my case, it might be due to a graphics issue. I figure it must be so because I used to have Windows 8 on this Laptop before I removed Windows and replaced with the new Linux tri-boot system. The display/resolution for the old Win 8 were great. However, with respect to the Linux distro's that I have here on the laptop, the display is smaller. Suggesting it's a resolution issue. Now with Open Suse, that same graphic problem exists and I get the kernal panic issue. In consideration of the research I"ve enabled with respect to this same kernal panic issue, might yours be a result of a resolution issue?
Have you considered that perhaps?
May you have good thermals.

Thanks Ph0z3 and Jerry for you help!

@Ph0z3: Ok, I have added now "elevator=noop" to my kernel parameters (splash and quiet where already there). I post an image of the next kernel panic as soon as I get it (If get another one!). May I ask you why do you think that is a I/O scheduler problem?

I have already tried other kernels, a lot of them, older and newer time ago with linux mint 17 and the problems persists.

@Jerry: I haven't considered a resolution issue. It's because I haven't seen any information related in the kernel panics with the display (both on windows xp/7 and Linux the resolution is good). I don't think that it could be a problem in my case. But I can try whatever you want to be sure of that!

I can't help you with your problem. All I can say is that I encounter the same problem since the installation of Mint 17. The previous version hasn't caused any problems on my Computer whatsoever.
