Dell Inspiron 3542 inconvenience/Display dims with boot

Post by mbott »

I have two system. My primary desktop is a homebuilt i5 on an ASUS motherboard running Ubuntu 14.04.3. My Dell laptop is an Inspiron model 15 / 3542 less that a year old. With the laptop, I generally swap hard drives with various flavors of Linux to play around with. I've settled on Ubuntu 15.04 and Mint 17.2 Cinnamon as my preferred laptop set-up.

With Mint 17.2, at about 6 seconds into the boot, the screen drops to about 10% brightness. Easy remedy once booted up, but I'd like to find out what is doing this and "fix" it if possible. The same action occurred when I initially booted from the Live DVD. This does not happen with Ubuntu but IIRC, it did when I first booted with its Live DVD, too.

My question is where is the best place to start looking so this can be resolved?

Thanks!

One question - did you see it happening with mint 17.1? I didnt on my Dell Latitude, ran an upgrade and have since seen the problem.

Have you looked at the bios setting? I had a laptp doing that and it was set in the bios to be at XX setting. I changed it to 90%.

Maybe also look at the power mangmt--> brightness tab in your control panel.

I doubt it is the bios, If I throw either a Ubuntu drive or a windows drive into the laptop, then the "dimming" does not occur.
