External USB3 HDD not showing
I have been searching google for hours to find a solution to this, but while I have plenty of posts from others having similar problems, not have helped me. Basically I have Seagate Baracuda 3TB drive in a StarTech USB3 table top caddy type thing. It works fine when I boot into Win 7, but not when I boot into Mint 17.1 Rebecca KDE. I get the notification popup which lists "jmicron Corp" under Storage Drive, but my HDD is not listed. Clicking on the plug icon to mount, does nothing. While clicking on the "jmicron Corp" title produces a dialogue box to format a USB stick. Jmicron corp is the name of the USB3 chipset on my Del XPS (2011). I'm desperately trying to transfer some work files over, so I would appreciate any help!

Re: External USB3 HDD not showing
Edit... another smaller HDD does work fine, and did work before - thought I better add that. The 3TB HDD that doesn't work is formatted on windows NTFS as is the smaller drive. I did once have a problem with the 3TB drive on Windows, where I got locked out of it and had to change all the permissions on it. I guess that's the problem. Does anyone know how to fix that for Linux?

al35mm,
Are you using the same system / same controller card with both OS's?
I have run into situations where a particular controller card would not work with drives larger than 2T. There are also issues with whatever dock you are using - as some docks cannot handle drives larger than 2T.
Example:
I have a Vantec NexStar dual-drive dock that doesn't work on drives larger than 2T.
Windows is more "permissive" and will try to mount and show the drive, but attempts to write to it will, eventually, result in a trashed drive.
Linux is more protective and if the dock won't support the large drive, Linux won't mount it.
However, with the next generation Vantec NexStar, larger capacity drives work wonderfully.
I have a system that has on-board SATA, that will not read drives larger than 2T, however with a compatible controller card plugged in, the drive works wonderfully when plugged into the add-on card.
It might be possible that the controller card / chipset you're using may have driver issues with Linux. I discuss this in another post located at viewtopic.php?f=49&t=218460
Let us know what happens.
