Internet disconnects when loading high-quality flash videos

Postby Bear » Wed Jan 14, 2009 2:13 am

Hello all,

This is my first post on these forums. I started using Linux Mint a couple months ago and absolutely love it! There are just a few kinks I need to work out.

I've been experiencing some weird behavior whenever I load a long or high-quality flash video, such as those on YouTube. Before the video finishes loading, my internet connection gets disconnected. This happens consistently.

I suspect that my power supply is to blame for this. Videos loaded fine before I installed a Geforce FX5500 PCI card, but after I installed it, this started happening. My power supply is rated at 250W, and the Geforce FX5500 requires at minimum a 250W power supply, but my CPU usage usually nears 100% when I watch flash videos, and this usually coincides with the loss of internet connection. Flash video playback has always been choppy, and after reading several forum posts, I gather that this problem is currently unsolved for NVIDIA cards, right?

Going back to the first issue, how can I be sure it's the power supply? Are there any other possible reasons for this problem? I have a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop with 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 CPU, 768 MB memory, and the GeForce FX5500 128MB PCI video card with drivers installed via EnvyNG.

Thanks in advance.

Try this first, because I also had problems with Flash and this fixed it for me:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge flashplugin-nonfree gnash gnash-common libflashsupport mozilla-plugin-gnash nspluginwrapper swfdec-mozilla && sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

I've tried your fix, and it produced some improvement--my connection doesn't consistently get cut off, but it does probably half the time. Also, CPU usage is still very high. I do not notice any difference, however, when viewing YouTube HD videos; these are still extremely choppy.

Well HD videos are choppy sometimes on my Core2Duo machine. We have to wait for Adobe to provide better plugins... I can't even watch fullscreen high quality videos on the 64 bit version...

Has anyone else seen their internet connection get cut off when viewing Flash videos, especially long or high-quality clips?

Just an update; I turned off Compiz and tried watching YouTube HD videos, and my connection gets cut off each time.

This probably will not help, but all of my internet connection problems have always been due to my wireless router... Do you get these problems when you are directly plugged in?
