MTP access to Sony Xperia android phone

Post by asquartz »

I'm having trouble connecting my phone (Xperia Z3 Compact) to the computer for data transfer. I also have a Nexus 7, which works fine, so I'm trying to work out the difference.

Both are on Android 6 Marshmallow, and new in this version, you have to select MTP transfer every time it is plugged in. I am doing this.

If I plug the Nexus 7 in, a file explorer window opens up automatically. If I type mtp-detect I get masses of information back about the device.

If I plug the Xperia in, nothing happens on the laptop. If I type mtp-detect, I get:

Code: Select all

Unable to open ~/.mtpz-data for reading, MTPZ disabled.libmtp version: 1.1.6

Listing raw device(s)
   No raw devices found.
Anyone successfully using an Xperia for this? Is Xperia's MTP different to the Nexus? Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi asquartz,

I cannot say why the Xperia's MTP is not working for you, but here are some articles and some information that you might find useful.

Using "KDE Connect" to Sync your Android Device(s) with Your Linux Computer ... oid-linux/

Pushbullet Puts Your Android And PC On The Same Wavelength ... avelength/

AirDroid Send SMS, Share Links, Transfer Files & More ... ndroid-21/

Dukto is a free, Open Source file transfer utility that can be used to used to transfer files over Local area network (LAN), including Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, Meego, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phones and Symbian (for Nokia touch phones). ... sfer-tool/

If you are not using KDE, then install these few programs below in the quote box in blue.
If you're experiencing issues with KDE apps (like Okular, Gwenview, KStars, kdenlive, ..etc) run the following command from your console terminal prompt: (you can copy & paste it too)
Depending on your setup, you might also need to install "KDE-runtime" as well.
sudo apt-get install kdelibs-bin kdelibs5-data kdelibs5-plugins

Hope this helps ...
