Brother HL-2270DW only printing to 'manual' tray
I have successfully installed drivers for my 'networked' (wireless) Brother HL-2270DW. Unfortunately, it only sends jobs to the manual feed tray... In 'Printer Properties' > Printer Options > Input Slot there are two options: Tray1 and Manual. I have Tray1 selected, but it still outputs to Manual. Has anyone else faced this? Is there somewhere else to change this setting? [Full disclosure: I'm using an xfce distro based on Mint 17.]

Re: Brother HL-2270DW only printing to 'manual' tray
I have a HL-2270DW, and have not had that problem, but have had other similar issues. I'm going to assume you installed the Brother drivers so that when you select a printer, you see Brother HL-2270DW. I say that because if you use the drivers from Linux, you have to use the HL-2170, and I'm not sure if that would make any difference. I do know if you use the Linux drivers, you don't get duplexing.
One thing about this model of printer, it can get confused after any change and act weird. So, the first thing to do is try and do a reset. Turn off the printer with your router and computer on. Hold down the Go button on the top, front, left side (the one with the lights above it) and turn on the printer. Make sure you do not let off holding the button down. Wait until all the lights start flashing, then stop flashing. When they stop flashing, let off holding the button. Then immediately, press the button 6 times - count as you do it. Then wait. The printer will go through a routine with spinning parts, lights flashing, then settle down. Once done, you have reset the printer. Try and see if that worked.

Though not for the 2270, here is a Brother page with the same info - this is a Brother method for reseting: http://support.brother.com/g/b/faqend.a ... 000105_007

Re: Brother HL-2270DW only printing to 'manual' tray
Thanks for the reply, felemur. Unfortunately, it didn't work... I held down the Go button, but the lights didn't flash--they just stayed on steady. I held it for about 30 seconds and then released the Go button. The lights went out, so I pushed Go six times. It whirred and flashed and then settled down. But now I can't even print from the manual tray...
I've gone into Printers > Properties for HL2270DW (Brother drivers) and tried to reassign the URI. Under Network I get:
Brother HL-2170W (BRW0022xxxxxx)
Brother HL-2270DW series
Neither of these work...
I'm going to try to reinstall the printer (though I do find that a bit more challenging in Linux than in Windows [CUPS? Generic? Huh? Wha...?])

Re: Brother HL-2270DW only printing to 'manual' tray
I reinstalled the printer using Brother drivers. I have HL2270DW in the Printers list (with a blue exclamation mark on it...). If I go Printer > Properties and Device URI > Change and select 'Network Printer', after a few moments (of searching, I presume?) I see:
Brother HL-2170DW (BRW0022xxxxx)
Brother HL-2270DW (BRN001Bxxxxx) (Current)
Brother HL-2270DW (BRN001Bxxxxx, 192.168.11.xxx)
[the 'x'es are all real numbers or letters, I just don't know if I should give complete addresses...]
If I 'Probe' Host: BRN001Bxxxxx, a little window pops up for an instant and then goes away. I think it says 'Scanning'... At the very least, it seems to find what it's looking for.
If I 'Print Test Page', Printer State says: Processing - Unable to locate printer "BRN001Bxxxxx". The Print Queue shows Status: Pending - Not connected.
If I run (I found this command in a forum thread) I get:
So somehow my computer /knows/ that there's a Brother HL-2270DW printer out there on the network, but it's unable to 'locate / connect' to it... So strange...

Re: Brother HL-2270DW only printing to 'manual' tray
Back to square one...
I installed another version of the printer using Printers > Add and then providing the IP address in Network Printer > Find Network Printer > Host. After going 'Forward' and making the appropriate selections, I once again have a printer that works. However, I'm still only able to print from the manual tray... I have Tray1 selected in Printer Properties > Printer Options > InputSlot (Manual is the other option and it is not selected).

Re: Brother HL-2270DW only printing to 'manual' tray
I am not an expert enough to know why that is happening. What I suggested worked for me when things went wrong. I will experiment with my old laptop that I don't mind messing up to see if I can be of any help.
BTW, have you tried hooking up the printer to the computer with the USB? I know when setting that printer up with Windows and Linux, I HAD to have it plugged into the USB to even set up the wireless.
I think have to do the reset thing again after the USB is plugged in, and do the 10 clicks on the Go button as described in one of the links I gave to turn the wireless on or off.
When you said:
"Thanks for the reply, felemur. Unfortunately, it didn't work... I held down the Go button, but the lights didn't flash--they just stayed on steady. I held it for about 30 seconds and then released the Go button.",
Did you have the printer off, then hold down the Go button, and while holding the Go button down, turn on the printer? If that didn't work, I wonder if there is a printer issue.
Regarding the:
"Brother HL-2170DW (BRW0022xxxxx)
Brother HL-2270DW (BRN001Bxxxxx) (Current)
Brother HL-2270DW (BRN001Bxxxxx, 192.168.11.xxx)
[the 'x'es are all real numbers or letters, I just don't know if I should give complete addresses...]"
For the device URI: mine shows: dnssd://Brother%20HL-2270DW%20series._pdl-datastream._tcp.local/
BUT, I have my printer plugged into my router via Ethernet (the HL-2270DW has an ethernet port), and you are showing wireless info. In theory, whether wireless, ethernet or USB, it should all work the same. When I did have the printer wireless when I first installed Mint Cinnamon 17.2, it did work perfectly, so I know it can be done, and I don't THINK I was seeing xxxxx in places like that, but again it was a while ago.
I'll experiment tomorrow morning to see if I can come up with something.

I haven't tried connecting with USB--I've just used wireless. I'll give that a go next; thanks for the thought.felemur wrote:I am not an expert enough to know why that is happening. Yes: printer was off, Go button was held, power was turned on with Go button firmly pressed. The printer works fine with my Windows machines, so I rather think it's not a 'printer issue'.felemur wrote:When you said:

For various reasons, my printer is not near my router so I can't connect the two via ethernet cable. As for all the 'xxxxx', I just put those in to mask the real addresses--I don't see them either!felemur wrote:Regarding the:

Thanks for sticking with me. I'm going to try installing again with a USB connection.

Re: Brother HL-2270DW only printing to 'manual' tray
Well, at the end of the day I cannot figure out what is going wrong with your printer just using the manual feed. Just on the off chance you haven't seen these, here are the pages I that I had bookmarked when I was setting mine up on Linux Mint for the first time last year. Not sure if there is anything here that would be of help, but just in case.

CUPS = Common Unix Printing System.knottedknickers wrote:[CUPS? Generic? Huh? Wha...?])
While CUPS started in the '90s on Linux, it's now owned by Apple and developed primarily for OS X.
CUPS is the print spooler, and there are filter/driver systems that attach to it, like Foomatic and Gutenprint.
Re: Brother HL-2270DW only printing to 'manual' tray
Thanks for those links--I'll have to look into them some day soon! I've been busy, and then sick, so I've only just gotten around to trying a USB install. Same result--test page goes to Manual tray (after about three minutes of 'Processing' [is that normal for Linux? The Windows machines I have connected to this printer turn out a page in about three seconds])...felemur wrote:Well, at the end of the day I cannot figure out what is going wrong with your printer just using the manual feed. Thanks for the explanation, LinuxJim. So, ... is CUPS the preferred thing to use, since it's primarily for OS X? Or Foomatic? Don't worry about it - they are all built-in to the system already. I was just explaining the terms since you were likely to run across them in your search.knottedknickers wrote:Thanks for the explanation, LinuxJim. 1. Open a terminal: Ctrl+Alt+T
2. Download the driver installation script:
wget http://download.brother.com/welcome/dlf ... 2.0.0-1.gz
3. Unzip it:
gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-2.0.0-1.gz
4. Run it as root:
sudo bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.0.0-1
5. Enter HL2270-DW as "model name", then y to continue
6. When asked "Will you specify the DeviceURI?" choose "No" for USB connection or "Yes" for network connection.
I tried a bunch of ways, delete your current printer before you do this.
PS I'm running Mint Rosa 17.3 64 bit

Thanks for the detailed instructions, Rebel Dog. One further question: if, in 6), I choose "Yes" for network connection, which Device URI should I select? I get the following options:Rebel Dog wrote:1. Open a terminal: Ctrl+Alt+T

Re: Brother HL-2270DW only printing to 'manual' tray
Sorry you are having this issue. I did some looking and something is bothering me.
I opened a PDF and checked for Duplex. I then opened a Open Office document, Duplex is not checked.
So now if I just hit print in a PDF it prints both sides of the paper.
If I hit Print in a Office document it does not, I have to select Duplex in every program that prints.
Now if I open my printer in Settings, click Properties, Printer Options it also here gives options to select different trays or Duplex.
Is it possible you are facing this?
For me, I want to choose each time I print, so I do not set any defaults, I do leave Adobe set for Double Sided
