Linux Mint 18 Working on Chuwi Hi12 Tablet PC 64 Bit Cherry Trail Quad Core

Post by Destry » Sun Jun 12, 2016 1:01 pm

Got LM 18 working on my 12 inch tablet! Please see this post: viewtopic.php?f=58&t=223426&p=1176655#p1178213

I am considering getting this toy and playing around with various Linux systems including Mint. My old original Motorola Xoom is still working after 5 years but is quite outdated. Running Big Part and Android 4.4.4 on it. Originally came with Honeycomb.

Anyone had a chance to try LM on this new tablet yet?
I have read a couple older posts discussing various incompatibilities in the past with wifi, bluetooth etc... with tablets with the Cherry Trail Processor

Sweet little machine IF you can get it to boot to a USB port and if the graphics and WiFi worked. Would be interesting to try with the Beta version of LM18 (4.4 kernel).

I am thinking of clicking the buy now button on it.. Only waiting for a bit more feedback on this tablet on this forum first.

I did some research on xda-developers and general searches and looks like root would be easy in the Android side and with that I am sure tools can be installed to trigger it to boot from usb. My experience tells me with Android devices I can get it to install from the microSD card and I have a 128 gig microSD card to use with it. Feeling anxious to try it as I can put the LM live usb on the microSD card as well as a thumb drive.

Don't grit your teeth... Win10 is holding the space that you are going to convert to ext4 for Mint! I presume you will leave android on the device for fun purposes!

You seem to be able to read my mind! I definitely want to dump the win10! I like Android so it can stay.

Plugged in my EQUIP USB wifi and it worked.

So the only issue I see with Mint 18 on this tablet is wifi not working.

For the giggles of it, I tried LM 17.3 KDE... No touch screen!

Where is LM 18 KDE? That's what I am waiting for. Guess it's Cinnamon for now... 8)

The Mint Dev team will start working on the KDE and XFCE versions after the Cinnamon and Mate versions are approved for stable release. Or at least that is what has happened historically.
