Mouse cursor jumps around and issues clicks without me touching it.

Post by expat_tony »

I have a serious problem with mice (plural of mouse) going crazy

I run Mint 17.0 64bit on a Lenovo U laptop. There is no other OS installed on it.
A few weeks ago my cheapo MS plugin mouse started jumping around when I tried to navigate the screen. This has got progressively worse to the point that the computer is uncontrollable, and I'm having to write this on my trusty old 32 bit Fujitsu which also uses LM17.0.
Using my browser is positively dangerous, because the mouse clicks on objects I don't want to open.
The jumping cursor even continues when no mouse is attached, but only in precise vertical or horizontal moves.

It may be a hardware problem, but not with the mouse, because I've tried both a wireless dongle mouse and a better quality Hama USB mouse, to no avail.
Touchpad is the same, and changing from USB 3.0 to a USB 2.0 port makes no difference

Is it HW, or is there a mouse controller I need to repair? And how the heck would I do that with no control over the cursor?
If all else fails, how could I take remote control of the Lenovo via my older laptop, to at least back up my Home folder?

Does it show the same behaviour in the live session of the DVD of Mint 17.3?

Sorry Pjotr, I'm not familiar with that at all. Can you give me a link?

Boot your laptop from the Mint 17.3 DVD and see what the mouse does then.

Get the iso:
http://mirror.jmu.edu/pub/linuxmint/ima ... -64bit.iso

Burn a DVD with it, in the right way:

Or use Unetbootin or Yumi to create a bootable USB thumb drive.

Thank you Pjotr. I'm downloading the ISO as we speak and will make a boot drive (Lenovo has no DVD burner, a lack I've regretted ever since I bought it).

I'll bump this thread once I've tried the boot drive. Could be a few days but keep watching, please.

Do you think LM 17.4 would behave differently from 17.3, by the way? Or are you simply more familiar with 17.3?

LM 17.4 does not exist. After LM 17.3 will follow LM 18, which is at now only available as beta version.

There is no 17.4, nor will there be. Version 18 is now out in beta.

Is it possible that your problems are being caused by you accidently touching the touchpad?
Just a thought - this has happen to me in the past.
You can disable the touchpad in Linux Mint 17.3.
If you do not have the touchpad disable, I would suggest disabling it and see if that has any effect on your "mouse" problems - only take a minute.
