hmmmmmm.... reluctant hardware, I love it.

Check Synaptic, search for 'uvcvideo' and eventually remove it. Synaptic will list any other item involved and ask confirmation. If unsure, just cancel. Reboot afterwards and do an update in Synaptic (reload, check all upgradeable items and apply). search again for 'uvcvideo'. If all went well, it should be installed and running...

If this isn't working, start studying Greek, my Latin is running out...

End result - webcam module in the laptop lid was buggered.
Replaced - all working fine.
Still is...
