Cinnamon crashes after updating Nvidia driver to 367.57

Post by bararan »

There is likely a bug in the latest Nvidia driver update (version 367.57) that caused my Cinnamon to crash at startup. It may be better to avoid it and skip this update.

This evening I accepted an update on my Nvidia driver from version 361.42-0ubuntu2 to 367.57ubuntu0.16.04.1. After rebooting my computer and logging on to Linux mint I got an error saying Cinnamon crashed and the system was in Fallback mode. I tried to restart Cinnamon several times without any success. Only after starting the driver manager and switching from Nvidia driver to Xorg (and restarting my system, obviously) was the error gone and Cinnamon could start and function properly.

Problems are not limited to Nvidia 367 driver series too, the 304 series got an update as well that produces a black screen for me, thus no GUI any more to switch off the Nvidia drivers, thus I'm screwed.

Tried the nomodeset suggestion from one of the other threads, but sadly no effect.

Is there any possibility for you to launch cinnamon in fallback mode? Mine launched in this mode automatically, thanks to that I was able to launch synaptics and get rid of the faulty drivers.

My driver update was to 304.132 on the same day (probably older machine) and it also gave serious problems.

Everything up to and including the log in screen is fine but after login I get a blank screen with active cursor. The system is running as the cursor changes from arrow to bar as I go over the splash window I have (tkremind) and when I type ctl-alt-backspace I get a flash of the correct desktop before dropping back to the login screen which renders OK. For a temporary fix I have run apt-get remove --purge nvidia* so that I can run on the nouveau display driver and even that occasionally crashes leaving diagonal striped dashes on the screen but I don't know if that was previous behaviour as I have not used that driver.

Thanks for your attention, Graeme

Ok I thought I was alone. My older machine running Mint 18, Cinnamon now crash on startup as well. This is new. It's running Nvidia 304.132 (GT-7300) which I think was updated recently (from 304.131?). Reverting to the nouveau driver works.

Eh Houston, you have a serious problem here ????

I am running Mint 17.3 Xfce, so this may not be helpful but...

I installed 367.57 and I was able to boot up and run it fine, but there was a new error that flashes by so fast I couldn't see much of it. Copied from another thread, I believe it was this error or very similar: "failed to execute /bin/systemctl stop --no-block nvidia.persistenced.service no such file or directory".

I was not in the mood to fool with it, so I just restored a back up image with version 352.63 installed. In my case the option to install an earlier version is gone now. All I get is 367.57 or nouveau. So if I were to do a clean Mint install, it would mean it is straight up broken with no working Nvidia driver available.

Hi,

I have the exact same problem. My notebook is Compaq Presario F763NR. MY OS is Linux Mint 18 with Cinnamon.
My video card is Nvidia Geforce 7000M/ nforce 610M.

I have to change from close source nvidia driver to open source one, and the problem with cinnamon fall back mode is gone.

Thanks.

Now, we will need to wait for Nvidia to release the fix for the driver correct?
Or, the Linux Mint developer would provide the fix for us soon?

Thank you.

Note, that the proprietary drivers are not open source. Only NVidia can do anything about that.

All what the Mint developers could do is to set the NVidia driver to level 4 or 5 in the update manager (and of course the users have to accept only level 1 to 3 updates). Until than set the update in the update manager to the ignore list.

Hi everyone,

Are people impacted using nvidia-prime? bumblebee? Do you remember if you were using the NVIDIA or Intel GPU at the time of the update? Was anything else updated?

Despite having the hardware here (Asus laptop, GTX 850M) I can't reproduce the issue, but I'm suspecting someting in ubuntu-drivers-common. I prepared a deb. You can try it if you're running Mint 18 64-bit:

http://filebin.ca/31C3G2wMipLC/ubuntu-d ... _amd64.deb

If you don't mind trying it out, please reboot after installing it and do let me know if it helps in any way.

I wouldn't mind seeing the results of inxi -Gxx and the content of /var/log/gpu-manager.log from people reporting this issue too.

Additional observation:
When I booted after the installation, the screen got black, before I reached the login screen. Trying to forcibly reboot using REISUB worked only at the second or third attempt; I have never before seen this, in all other cases REISUB worked for me in the past at the first run. The hard drive LED was dark at the time I used REISUB, so hard drive activity was not the culprit for missing reaction at the first attempt.

I don't think so, as I run LM 17.3 (sorry I missed to add this info). From your previous post I understand, that this for Mint 18 only.
