Re: Cinnamon crashes after updating Nvidia driver to 367.57

Post by SETHANATH »

Please excuse my previous post as my explaination is too short.
The correct sequence of the story is

1. I had the same problem as described by the owner of the post.
2. I did installed the file that you gave.
3. I rebooted after I installed the file that you gave. However, I still get the Cinnamon fallback problem. So, I proceeded to using Nouveau driver. At this point, I noticed that there was one update shown in the update manager, which I clicked install.
4. I pasted the result from $ inxi -Gxx and log_file: /var/log/gpu-manager.log to this forum. However, I could not install the file that you gave any more.
I also notice that the file that you gave has the same version number as the one from the update manager, so I thought it made sense to say I could not install your file any more.

Thank you very much for your help. Please excuse my typo.

Here is the other information that you requested

Code: Select all

$ apt policy ubuntu-drivers-common
ubuntu-drivers-common:

Post by Cosmo. »

I just switched for an additional test between all choices, that the driver manager offers: Nvidia 367, Nvidia 340 and nouveau. Nvidia 340 and Nouveau work fine, with Nvidia 367 (without installing or updating anything else) gives the same as before: A black screen, I do not get to the login screen, than nothing. Prime was active (to my remembrance this is the default in 17.3), not the Prime applet. So far the log-file regarding prime is not correct (reproducible).

You shouldn't have version 0.4.17.2. That's the Ubuntu version, it doesn't support MDM.

You can place the deb I linked to in your home folder, then open a terminal and type this to install it:

Code: Select all

cd
sudo dpkg -i ubuntu-drivers-common_0.4.17linuxmint2_amd64.deb
That should downgrade your version and give you back MDM support. There's obviously another reason why the session fails, but the lack of MDM support is a sure way to get a black screen.

Cosmo, in Mint 17.x, what's your result for:

Code: Select all

Good Morning,

I did the update just now, and I could see that the update that you mentioned did come through. Then, I rebooted right away. After the reboot was done, I changed from Nouveau to close source Nvidia driver, and rebooted.

I found that Cinnamon fallback mode is still there. I also repulled the log file for you.

Well no, I can't see your nvidia drivers here... maybe with "inxi -Gxx".

Also, is your card an Optimus card? shouldn't you have "nvidia-prime" installed??

You can use the Driver Manager to install the drivers properly.

Well no, I can't see your nvidia drivers here... maybe with "inxi -Gxx".
Here is what I have just pulled.

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Gxx
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA C67 [GeForce 7000M / nForce 610M]
           bus-ID: 00:12.0 chip-ID: 10de:0533
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: nvidia (unloaded: fbdev, vesa, nouveau)
           Resolution: 1280x800@59.98hz
GLX Renderer: N/A GLX Version: N/A Direct Rendering: N/A
Also, is your card an Optimus card? shouldn't you have "nvidia-prime" installed?
The card that comes with my note book is Nvidia Geforce 7000M / nForce 610M as you can see from the screenshot that I attached.

You can use the Driver Manager to install the drivers properly.

Yes, I did use the Driver Manager to install the driver, but I do not know what Nvidia Prime is.

Please help.

Thanks.

OK, sorry it's my mistake. You don't need nvidia-prime if you're using nvidia-304. Sorry, I thought you were using 367.57.

I'm starting to think we're looking not just at one issue, but different ones here...

The ubuntu-drivers-common 1:0.4.17.2linuxmint1 update fixes an issue in Mint 18 for Optimus card owners which resulted in a black screen after an update from the nvidia-361 drivers to the nvidia-367 drivers.

My Cinnamon also crashed as you can see from my second screenshot. You would see the two strips from the top as well as the second one in the bottow.
Is it true that Nvidia dropped the support for this 304 driver?

What should I do now?

Thank you so much.

Re: Cinnamon crashes after updating Nvidia driver to 367.57

Post by clem »

Ok, I've got news.

There are at least two separate issues here, but I'll enumerate 3, cause I'm not sure whether the 3rd one is related or not.

Issue #1 - Mint 18 - Nvidia 367

This issue is specific to Linux Mint.
The nvidia-367 drivers introduced a change in the way optimus works.
ubuntu-drivers-common 1:0.4.17.2linuxmint1 was released in the repositories to fix this issue.

Issue #2 - Mint 18 - Nvidia 304.132

This is issue is global and also happens in Ubuntu.
There is a bug report for it at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1639180
There are no solution for it yet.
A workaround is to downgrade to the nvidia-304.131 drivers:

Code: Select all

- CTRL+ALT+F2 to console
- login
- sudo apt-get remove nvidia*
- sudo apt-get autoremove
- sudo apt-get install nvidia-304=304.131-0ubuntu3 --install-recommends
- reboot
Issue #3 - Mint 17.x - Nvidia 304.132

I assume this is the exact same issue as issue #2.. i.e. a problem introduced in 304.132.
Here, the workaround would be to downgrade to version 304.117.

Code: Select all

- CTRL+ALT+F2 to console
- login
- sudo apt-get remove nvidia*
- sudo apt-get autoremove
- sudo apt-get install nvidia-304=304.117-0ubuntu1 --install-recommends
- reboot
Check your ubuntu-drivers-common version

For all issues, and no matter what nvidia drivers or mint release you're using. You should not use a version of ubuntu-drivers-common coming from Ubuntu, as these do not support MDM. You can check that with:

Code: Select all

apt version ubuntu-drivers-common
Your version should contain "linuxmint".

Thank you so much. It works.

Now, if someone may help me, one last thing, by making the version of Nvidia driver that is making problem disappears from Update Manager.

Let me rephrase it "How do I hide the version of Nvidia driver that is making problem from Updata Manager?"

Thank you.

The easiest way is to right-click the update and select to ignore it.

You can ignore that particular version, it's a bit more technical though. That process is described as a workaround in the comment section of the bug report I linked to.

I found it, and it works as you mentioned.

$ cd /etc/apt/preferences.d
$ gksudo leafpad local-nvidia-quirks
and paste the following message.

Code: Select all

Explanation: block this specifique update because of OpenGL problem with 304.132
Package: nvidia-304
Pin: version 304.132-0ubuntu0.16.04.2
Pin-Priority: -10

Package: nvidia-opencl-icd-304

Then, close your leafpad, and reboot your machine.

Thank you.
