I was also bitten by the 367.57 bug. Jimallyn provided my solution in my thread HERE. Basically, deleting the Nvidia drivers gets the system back to "normal". At that point, the pre-upgrade driver can be re-installed and NOT updated if you like... or NOT if you don't! Thanx again Jim!

reorx: You should be able to go back to 367.57 if you upgrade ubuntu-drivers-common.

I thank you sir! :)

The system is stable as it is now. It was also very stable with the 352 driver as well. It is not a gaming machine and doesn't need the latest and greatest in the way of drivers.

Just to let you know in case you need the info Clem
I got Sarah 18 cinnamon on my asus X751LX with a geforce gtx 950m no issues with the drivers
I did use the ppa to upgrade the drivers at first before the update came down the pipeline but after it upgraded through the manager there was no issue at all. I knocked out the ppa so it would not be used anymore since the 367 driver came down anyhow.
Also it has a i7 intel
Not sure if you needed that info but just in case it all works good.

I was for the last 2 days disconnected to the Internet, so I could not read or react in any way.
Is this question still relevant?

This does not help for Mint 17.3. I get

Code: Select all

apt version ubuntu-drivers-common
1:0.2.91.11linuxmint2
This version has been upgraded here on 16. Feb 16, a newer version has not been offered.
As I reported 3 days ago, with Nvidia 367 I do not even get into the login screen. That leads to the result, that the recommendation in the driver manager is really dangerous. Further details are given here.

Exactly the same as I have

Code: Select all

steve@steve-Z97X ~ $ apt version ubuntu-drivers-common
1:0.2.91.11linuxmint2
but in my case, 367.57 works on LM17.3 Cinnamon as I posted here:
viewtopic.php?f=49&t=233050#p1237723
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't.

slipstick, you use a different NVidia card, this will most likely make the difference.

You're probably right. I just thought maybe listing my system info as an example of a system working with 367.57 might provide a clue to someone as what the problem is.

Here's the upstream bug at NVIDIA (for the 340 driver):

https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi ... ue-quot-/2

Last known status is:
The change that introduced this problem has been identified and the fix is being evaluated.
So it looks promising.

Clem, I've tried your instructions to downgrade to 304.117 in 17.3, but only booted into fallback mode. I see that it upacked some 304.132 stuff and a kernel error.
Building initial module for 3.16.0-38-generic
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.16.0-38-generic (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-304/304.117/build/make.log for more information.
Setting up nvidia-libopencl1-304 (304.132-0ubuntu0.14.04.2) ...
Also,
Warning: No support for locale: en_US.utf8
I saw something about the kernel in one of the myriad post about this. Do I need to upgrade mine? I'm far from being an expert user and this is very confusing to me.
I'm thinking it might be best to wait for a fix from Nvidia. Will it be in the update manager when it comes out?

You shouldn't mix both versions. Try to force the downgrade of all 304.132 packages to 304.117. For instance, here, you can add nvidia-libopencl1-304 (and maybe nvidia-settings too) to the list, like this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install nvidia-304=304.117-0ubuntu1 nvidia-libopencl1-304=304.117-0ubuntu1 nvidia-settings=304.117-0ubuntu1 --install-recommends

Type this to see what versions are installed:

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep 304.1
That should list all packages which version is either 304.117 or 304.132.

I'd recommend to remove all these packages or to use the Driver Manager to remove the drivers.

Once they're all gone, then install the 304.132 version.

I removed the drivers, rebooted and installed the 304.132 version. I still got a black screen so I removed it.

I am having this problem as well on my Mint 17.1 Mate.

I tried to resolve the issue by backing out all versions of the nvidia drivers and reinstalling them one at a time. The end result did not get me any different results on boot. Nor did it solve the error kicked out by Steam "OpenGL GLX extension not supported display." The two are tied together. System stats below.

There are at least two separate issues here, but I'll enumerate 3, cause I'm not sure whether the 3rd one is related or not.

Issue #1 - Mint 18 - Nvidia 367

This issue is specific to Linux Mint.
The nvidia-367 drivers introduced a change in the way optimus works.
ubuntu-drivers-common 1:0.4.17.2linuxmint1 was released in the repositories to fix this issue.

Check your ubuntu-drivers-common version
Blank screen here after splash screen. Issue #1. (edit: Mine is Mint 17.3).
I can only ssh it. Am I suppose to sudo apt-get upgrade to fix? Didn't work :(

ubuntu-drivers-common version is OK (linuxmint).

Thanks in advance!

I'm happy to report that I just installed 367.57-0ubuntu0.14.04.1 and now it works! I'm using 17.3 with a GTX 460. It looks like I'll have to reinstall Wine, but Linux games are running at full speed. Thanks for all your help everybody! :D
