[SOLVED] Keyboard freezes after e.g. Shift-Down

Post by goetzkluge » Thu Feb 23, 2017 7:16 pm

I run Linux-Mint 18.1 Mate 64 bit on an Acer R3-131 laptop. Kernel: 4.4.0-64 (Edit: Initially I wrote "Asus". Sorry.)
I took the risk to run the lates level 4 and level 5 updates (kernel, kernel drivers etc.)

Since about two weeks there is an issue with cursor keys and the Shift key.

As probably anybody, I used Up and Down in file managers to select files (and in Thunderbird to select emails). That doesn't work anymore. The Del key doesn't work as well.

And I used e.g. Shift+Down mark several files. But since about 2 weeks, Shift+Down (Shift+Up, Shift+Left, Shift+Right) locks the keyboard. I also checked the log files. Also Shift+Del doesn't work anymore. (It also causes a lock.)

There is no event around the seconds when I hit Shift+Right.

I got out of this by logging out of my account and then into my account. Then I found, that I can get the keyboard back by Shift+(Down and then any letter).

By the way: I just notice that wenn typing this post, the Left key works, but not the Right key.

This bug does not show on a Lenovo Ideapad S205.

Best regards,
Goetz

Create a fresh new user account. Same behavior there?

Thank you for the help. Unfortunately, the new account shows the same behavior.

I think that in a recent Kernel fix some issues with the keyboard of an Acer R11 laptop PC had been mentioned.

Edit: It's https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1630238 for Kernel 4.8.0. I run 4.4.0. I don't know whether I should take the risk to try 4.8.0
Also in my case the touch screen freezes. (I know how to get out of this with some work around on the operation level. But it's not too comfortable.)

I took the risk. Moving from Kernel 4.4.0-64 to 4.8.0-39 solved the problem.
