Battery Indicator not showing updated time or percentage

Post by mchi »

Hello everyone. I have searched for the forums for this issue but haven't found a solution. I recently installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 18,1 on a Dell 7437. I have used Linux Mint for most of the last 3 or so years but have been distro hopping for the last several months. I have not seen this problem until after I installed Linux Mint recently.

When I recently installed 18.1 I noticed that my battery indicator was not showing my percentage or time remaining. For example, when I boot up the system I will be shown the correct percentage and time left but after an hour or so, it will continue to show the same numbers. It sometimes updates the time and percentage but maybe only every 2-3 hours.

I installed an applet called "Battery Applet with Monitoring and Shutdown (BAMS)" that accurately shows percentage but I want a solution for the battery indicator. When I use the command "upower -d", the output shows the correct time and percentage but the battery indicator continues to show the wrong time and percentage. Any help with this will be appreciated. Here are some output readings that may help.

It looks to me like there might be a charger problem. As the power statistics shows the battery is discharging when the power adapter is working. Either that or the Wallwart is not in good shape. Just an observation. You might see if it charges when the laptop is off.
BTW the Battery Statistics is available on 18.1 Cinnamon by typing "power" in the box above "all applications".

Thanks for the reply. The laptop was not plugged in when I ran the commands. Thanks for the tip about looking at Power Statistics. That is very helpful.

Is anyone else having having the same problem with the battery indicator not showing updated time and percentage?

The issue with the battery indicator continues to be a problem but I found something pretty weird. When I click on the battery indicator, it gives me a pop up menu. If I click on "Power Management", a window opens. I click on "Batteries". The percentage and time for my battery is accurate here and if I click on the battery name, it updates the percentage and time in the battery indicator.

While this isn't really a fix, I found this to be strange behavior. It tells me that the problem is with the battery indicator applet. Any ideas on a fix?

Possibly

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware
Might pop up something after reboot.

Looks like I already had the latest version

$ sudo apt-get install linux-firmware
[sudo] password for chim:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
linux-firmware is already the newest version (1.157.8).

I just did an update last night and it appears this problem is now fixed. Battery indicator has been consistently updating to the actual battery percentage since I updated last night.

That's interesting.
I just put in a pair of IKEA's newer LADDA NiMH cells. They measure 1.27v on my meter... a little lower than normal cells (though NiMH are more constant voltage output, it's a bit lower than low drain voltage on Alkalines) and in Solaar they register 70% charged.

Mint is telling me they're only at 55% - so I guess a VERY rough indicator. Really this should have an actual LEVEL reading (so if max is 1.5V a reading of an actual percentage of charge level - so my two NiMH cells should read 2.54V from a max of maybe 3V and give 85%).

Freshly installed Mint 19.1 XFCE.
Good thing: battery indicator can be set to show %% and time, which is awesome
Bad thing: battery indicator always show "Discharging" no matter how power connected
