No sound. Pavucontrol shows disconnected outputs

Post by Antbat »

Hi!

I have a MSI "Godlike Carbon" motherboard with an Intel processor and Gskill RAM. It has Intel sound chipset and an NVIDIA Titan videocard with a soundchip.
I installed Mint Serena 64-bit with KDE. I selected to install the added codecs before installing and since then I'v installed recommended propietary NVIDIA drivers, installed the mint-meta-codecs, and updated, upgraded and tried to upgrade-dist (it was up to date).

I've read the thirteen topics that come up when searching "sound pavucontrol unplugged", mostly. Not sure how much I could understand.

Aplay shows:
antbat@MS-788 ~ $ aplay -l &
[2] 11274
antbat@MS-788 ~ $ **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

Alsamixer shows the Master almost halfway green the rest of the bar is black. The next three bars have the same amount of green but almost half the bars are white then red above the green. All the other bars are completely blank or black.

Pavucontrol Output Devices Port say "HDMI / DisplayPort (unplugged)" and Configuration Profile shows all the profiles are unplugged. This is while a file is playing in VLC.

I'm new to Mint and unsure about which outputs would be more helpful. Just ask me and I will post whatever is needed.

Thank you!

Did you perhaps install sandboxing application Firejail? If so, this should help:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... y-Firejail
(item 4, left column)

If not applicable, please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Thanks for the help. No, did not install Firejail. Understood your concern about the output, but the Reply answer box eats the indentations. I did try quotes but it did not work so I extra spaced the sections because I did not understand how to fix that. Here's the inxi output:

I like the name of your motherboard. :lol:

Try whether a newer kernel helps:

Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels
Install the latest kernel from the 4.4 series. Then reboot.

If that doesn't help, install the latest kernel of the 4.8 series. Then reboot again.

I havn't been able to follow up for a while, but yesterday I tried to update the kernel. I had 4.4 and tried the latest 4.10. It seemed to go well until the very end. When it tried to update grub, it reported it could not find one of my drives. I ran the update grub selection in the recovery options successfully but no change booting. Ff I try to boot the new kernel directly of try the recovery option it stops with a blank screen. Then I go Cntrl-Alt-F1 I can see errors but I dont' know what to do. Following are the two errors which repeat seven times changing only what I suppose are references or line numbers.

1) (line #) ACPI ERROR: NAMESPACE LOOKUP FAILURE AE_NOT_FOUND (20160930/psargs_359)

2) Method parse execution failed [1SB.PCIO.SATA1.SPTO._GTF] (Node ffff89133ed6fca8) AE_NOT_FOUND (20160930/psparse-543)

What happened when you installed the most recent 4.4 series kernel as Pjotr suggested? What happened when you next installed the most recent 4.8 series kernel as Pjotr suggested?
