Dell Latitude 7480, no wifi available ?

Post by tomos »

I have a Dell Latitude 7480, running the latest Mint Cinnamon download, my issue is that id does ntt appear to see the WIFI adapter (or load it) The hot keys on the laptop are the same for Blue tooth which i can turn on / off and which work fine , the built in device is either Qualcomm QCA61x4A 802.11ac Dual Band (2x2) Wireless Adapter+ Bluetooth 4.1 or the Intel® Dual-Band Wireless-AC 8265 Wi-Fi + BT 4.2 Wireless Card (2x2) .. (Looks like Intel from the outputs?)

Any ideas ? Do I need t down load an additional driver ? Many thanks for any assistance, I hope the outputs below are helpful

Re: Dell Lat 7480 , no wifi avaiable ?

Post by tomos »

I have since tried following the instructions here .. https://askubuntu.com/questions/706009/ ... er-ac-8260 (though downloaded the "firmware?" for the 8265 from Intel's site

but still no good .. Anyone have any ideas /.
The WIFI is Intel 8265

modprode iwlwifi loads it up ok, still no wifi adapter seems to be detected ?

Everything else on the laptop is working fine /

I should point out, this is mint running on a live USB , not a full install, do I simply need a newer kernel ?

Being that your system is very new, you may need to update the Linux kernel. Mint's Update Manager is the program to use for this. (Menu > View > Linux Kernels). I suggest you try the latest in the 4.8 series.

As richyrich says. Maybe you even need the 4.10 kernel. Reboot after installing it.

Yep, that is the problem, using a newer kernel (4.10 from the recent Ubuntu release) resolves the issue, though as I run mint from a live USB with persistence (as opposed to installed on to a USB stick) I am pretty much stuck with the LTS kernel from the download iso . I have tried updating the kernel, but it breaks things :) I am sure its do able but looks like a complex process..

Can I install in say virtual box, update, then create my own iso from within that environment to use on my 4Gb USB ?

Dead end.... Instead of a Frankenstein solution, better put Ubuntu Mate 17.04 on your USB stick:
https://ubuntu-mate.org/blog/ubuntu-mat ... l-release/

That's pretty close to Mint Mate. If you want to run Mint as Live USB, you'll probably have to wait for 18.3 (18.2 will, in all likelihood, run on the 4.8 kernel).
