Printer Setup

Post by dgoddard »

I need a printer to run with my instalation of Mint 18.
Before I blow a bundle on a printer, I would like to know if I can even set it up for this Operating System and laptop.

While exploring this issue I tried out the
MENU---Administration---Configure Printers---Add
sequence and was immediately prompted for the URI.

After a bunch of fooling around I managed to find out from Wikipedia that URI stands for "Universal Resource Identifier".

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_R ... Identifier is "a string of characters used to identify a resource."

I have not the slightest idea how I am supposed to go about finding such a URI and what is more, neither did the technical help person I talked to at the manufacturer of the printer I am considering buying, (Brother). In fact he was so inept that he did not even know what URI stands for either.

I do not have the time to put up with the grief of buying a printer only to have to sent it back because it is worthless to me.

My objective is to obtain a:
-- Wireless
-- Laser
-- Printer/scanner/color printer,
but I would also consider an ink jet.

But first I have to find one and then it has to be able to be driven by Linux Mint
The tecnician at Brother said that their printers are only compatible with Windows or Mac (which I presume was another point of ignorance on his part)

So I could use a little help here, I am trying to stay below $300. Speed is not very important even if it would be nice. And I am sort of concerned about the cost of supplies eating me alive. As long as the unit is reliable I would consider spending more on the machine if it would save me significantly on the cost of supplies. I generally only print on
--8.5x11 24 Lb paper or
--110 Lb cardstock

Printer suggestions would be appreciated
BUT
Mostly I need to know how to set up a wireless printer in Linux Mint

Suggest you start of by selecting a range of printers you might like and googling to see if there is linux support for them. I've got a brother colour laser and yes Brother do support linux. Downloaded a printer driver and cups wrapper off their site (as debs). Also got an epson inkjet - mainly for standby and also multifunction = scanner. Also supported in linux and only one deb to install (I've a feeling that in mint 18 it's already in there).

URI bit is easy, it's the network address (as you want wireless). The entry for my brother is

socket://192.168.0.3:9100

In this case, I'd manually set the IP address on the printer. So it's sat at local ip address 192.168.0.3 on port 9100 (which i think is the default mint gives you).

The epson, which is wireless is on

dnssd://EPSON%20XP-302%20303%20305%20306%20Series._ipp._tcp.local/?uuid=cfe92100-67c4-11d4-a45f-a4ee57b1f456

bit more complicated, but I think mint found this, if I'd done it manually it would have been socket://192.168.0.17:9100 cos that's where it sits on my network. When it's plugged in as a USB printer the URI is

usb://EPSON/XP-302%20303%20305%20306%20Series?serial=514650503134373131&interface=1

Again from memory, I think mint did this automatically.

Although it can be a bit daunting, installing printers in linux is not that bad, even if I went round in circles for a couple of hours first time round.

See this post viewtopic.php?f=90&t=247875 its live at the moment.

Brother printers work fine in Linux. Pjotr has written instructions for installing here:

https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/15

Yes, that is another case of "support" techs being ignorant.

My objective is to get my new HP4520 Envy printer up and running with my laptop computer

##################################################

My installed operating system data is
-- CPU~Dual core Intel Pentium P6100 (-MCP-)
-- speed/max~933/1999 MHz
-- Kernel~4.4.0-21-generic

-- x86_64 Up~5:15
-- Mem~714.1/2680.3MB
-- HDD~320.1GB(13.2% used)

-- Procs~173
-- Client~Shell inxi~2.2.35

##################################################

I have downloaded and executed
hplip-3.17.6.run
This action replaced an earlier hplip-3.16. ?????

##################################################

I am attempting to get my new printer, which is designated as:
-- HP 4520 Envy
-- Print/Scan/Copy/Web/Photo
-- inkjet
-- all-in-one
-- color printer scanner
configured and up and running and I having no success so far.

My primary problem is that any instructions I can find are too much jargon and not enough straight forward instruction. and are often ambiguous and ask me to enter things like "URI" for the printer and I neither know
-- What that is
-- Where to find it
-- What it would look like
-- How to use it

Too many times the instructions I find are not explicit, and while I am trying to learn my way through the installation/setup process I find that I am only guessing what the instruction was trying to tell me to do.

I am often asked things like enter the host name or the domain, and to my understanding there are multiple hosts or domains which that could be relevant and it is not obvious to me just which I am being asked for. For instance since this is a wi-fi setup, is this asking me something about my internet service provider (i.e. Missouricom.com) or is it asking me the name by which my computer is know, (i.e. Nebuchadnezzar)

Presumably I am supposed to know which host or domain that i am being asked for based on the context that I am working in and that is not clear to me.

When I do something like running hplip I find that it offers me multiple options that I have to select one of and really am only guessing.

I would appreciate any help I can get.

HP Envy 4520 a less than smooth install

Post by pdc_2 »

if you open a terminal; the black tv screen on the bottom tool-bar .......... and type

Code: Select all

hp-check
and see if that moves things along; next command would be

Code: Select all

hp-setup
.... that should set up the printer for you;

http://hplipopensource.com/node/332 HP talk all about that on that page in the link

____________

according to HP, your 4520 only needed 3.15 hplip so the 3.16 in Mint 18.1 would have been fine;

______

we tried setting up an HP recently; an OfficeJet; we mucked around with wireless; by just doing a usb connect first; that seemed to allow a wireless; (I had tried using the lcd to enter our router password, but it wasn't having that ...... then .......)

I have made some success in getting the 4520 Envy set up thanks to the suggestions received here so far. I did the USB setup of wireless printing option and now the computer seems able to see the printer whether or not I have the USB cable connected. But all I get is the printing dialog box from Libre office writer which looks like this.
Printer dialog.jpg
However when I click on OK nothing ever happens.

Suggestions anyone?

Assuming I ever get this thing to print, is there any hope of getting it to scan documents/diagrams/photos into my computer as unages???

Re: Printer Setup HP Envy 4520 series

Post by pdc_2 »

so you ran

Code: Select all

hp-check
and then

Code: Select all

hp-setup
; did either of those commands report on any problems please?

If you start at MENU at bottom left; go through ADMINISTRATION to PRINTERS: how many icons are there in that box, for your HP please? If one or more; can you please right-click on each in turn; look in PROPERTIES; and if you drag each window to the right; so you can see all the text .......... what does MAKE & MODEL say please? ........ if you paste back here what you get;

____________

If you can open a terminal again please; and type or copy in

Code: Select all

lpadmin -v
and if you can copy back what you get; and also if you can copy in

Code: Select all

dpkg -l hplip*
and please let us know what you get; and

Code: Select all

dpkg -l cups*
I will ask the forum moderators to move this thread up into the PRINTERS & SCANNERS forum that is at the top of this HARDWARE page; then others may see it too; so please look there

Yes, almost certain.

When posting results of terminal commands, please use the code button. See viewtopic.php?f=42&t=186483

To copy terminal text, select it with the mouse and press Ctrl+Shift+C (or click Edit in the menu bar, then Copy).

Please post the results of

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Are you wirelessly connecting the printer to a router, so it is on a network?

What is the status of the printer's wireless light? See pages 4 and 5 of the User Guide at http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04778353 (pdf sheets 8 & 9)

Re: Printer Setup

Post by pdc_2 »

Gosh; all the enthusiasts who gush about how HP is always so easy: sorry to hear of your continuing problems

so I don't think your Envy has been accepted by your router as someone to communicate with; if you type

Code: Select all

lpinfo -v
and look for mention of the HP: any joy?

We had a borrowed Officejet 4650 and I attempted to join it to the router: it kept refusing to join; so I plugged in a usb cable and set up a wired connection; and then curiously the wireless bit sort of happened and so I deleted the wired icon and the wireless was fine;

so if we check what

Code: Select all

lpinfo -v
gives and if no mention of the HP: (one assumes there will not be a mention as hplip cannot find it .....) .....
