Overheating CPU

Postby Tikhon03 » Sun Jul 16, 2017 10:42 pm

I have an ACER Aspire 5750G with the 64bit KDE version of Linux Mint 18 installed. The computer was purchased in December 2012, so it is more than 4 years old by now. Just today I was just doing normal activities -- browsing, editing text files, etc., the CPU load was not that high -- and yet it was acting very slow, which is not usual for my computer. So I checked top and I see 4 instances of kidle_inject, which I have never seen before with top. I googled it, and discovered that it is supposed to prevent other programs from overloading the CPU, to prevent it from overheating. It did not sound to me like the fan was running. I know the fan is capable of getting loud. I checked the core temp: 90 degrees Celsius for both cores. I installed fwts and ran it, and I am alarmed to see how many tests failed (see the log fragment below).

Is this a cpu fan issue? Is this a motherboard issue? I have replaced laptop motherboards before. What should I do? Thanks in advance for the help.

Note: the full log of fwts is over the 60000 character limit, so I am posting only the beginning and the end, but if a certain detail is missing, just ask and I will post it.

Hi "Tikhon03",

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

I would again like to emphasize that this is not normal behavior for my laptop. I have never had cpu overheating issues before this in spite of sometimes using programs that use both threads of both cores simultaneously so that cpu usage is maxed out. But yesterday I was hardly doing anything at all and it overheated. I will try cleaning the fans if I can. Any other advice with the new info would be helpful too.

I do not see any bad results from the "inxi -Fxzd" command, except that your dual core processor with 4 threads, is running at less than a 1/3 (800 mhz per core and thread) of its potential of 3.0 ghz. See link below...

Fans (CPU, GPU, case fans ) are notorious for wearing out after time, and will eventually need replacing. It could be your CPU cooler fan needs to be cleaned well or replaced. They have spray cans for cleaning electronics available everywhere, make sure to wait for a little time (15min-30min) after cleaning before turning back on, read can instructions. There are also some nice advancements in CPU cooler fans, but you have to make sure it can fit inside your computer or laptop computer.

Those articles I gave you have some good information, and installing TLP is also a good idea.

If you have not installed a temperature monitor, like KDE Thermal Monitor widget, or Psensor, etc... then do so...

Hope this helps ...

Well, TLP looks like a useful program, but the fact is the CPU fan is simply not spinning at all even under high load. I can hear that it is not spinning, and I can even see it if I flip the laptop over. As for the 800mhz thing, it occurs to me that 800x4=3200 which is 'approximately' 3000 and the CPU has 4 threads, so it could be a case of hardware manufactures using rounding and other math tricks to claim that their hardware is better than it actually is. You know like Western Digital claiming that a hard drive with 1 million MB is a 1 TB hard drive, even though in reality it only has .95 TB because 1000 is not equal to 1024 and so 1 million is not equal to 1024^2 (1024^2 MB = 1 TB with actual equality not marketing equality).

Hi "Tikhon03"

The CPU fan not spinning is a big problem that you should do something about quickly ... You can try manually spinning it to see if it comes back, or replace it...

TLP is considered a really nice laptop program.

As for the CPU core and thread speed, you can try the various options and techniques in the link I provided and see for yourself. Of course it could be misleading manufacturer advertising as well, but usually not...

Well, simply cleaning the fan worked. I did not even need to open up my laptop. I used an air can to blow the air into the vents for the cpu fan (both the intake and exhaust vents). During cleaning I could hear the fan spin as air was forced through the vents. When I turned my laptop back on, I could hear the familiar soft whirring sound. Doing the same activities does not cause a high temperature. On the contrary under normal load, the fan keeps the CPU around 50C. Everything sounds and acts normal! Thanks for the advice, and I will try the advice on those links regarding cpu speed.

Hi "Tikhon03",

You are welcome...

I would certainly try and make the CPU's work at their best performance.

I would also consider replacing the CPU cooler fan anyway. Here are some suggestions and links, and do not forget the "thermal paste" (might come with some, might not). Make sure they would fit in your computer too...

Ok, I will look into replacing the fan. I have spare bottle of artic silver so if a new fan doesn't come with it, that's no big deal.
