[Solved] NVIDIA gpu not detected by software

Post by ldhaney » Sun Aug 06, 2017 3:09 pm

Bit of a noob here. Sorry if this is covered elsewhere but I've done many searches and can't come up with anything like this. I've recently abandoned Windows 10 in favor of the simplicity of Linux Mint 8.2, worked out of the box just fine with my NVIDIA gpu but something has changed and I can't find an answer. My display is still working fine, but a couple of applications (Psensor and Blender) have all the sudden decided that I no longer have a gpu and are not allowing me to use it. Any help here would be much appreciated.

Try re-installing the nvidia driver:

Open a terminal and enter

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge nvidia-375

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge nvidia-340
Then reboot

Code: Select all

sudo apt install nvidia-375
Then reboot

Thanks mr_raider for your reply. I followed the instructions you gave me to no avail. I'm wondering why this started happening out of the blue. I did read that some people had to blacklist the Nouveau driver to get it to be recognized by the OS. This isn't my problem, the display is working fine through the GPU interface but my application programs I depend on are not seeing them. I really appreciate the try though.

I noticed a few differences between the readout for your nvidia card and my one.

I don't really know too much about this stuff but I do have Blender and GPU rendering working okay on my 18.2 Mint Mate install. The only things I can think of to check, and you may already have tried these, are to look in the Driver Manager to make sure that the nvidia driver is selected, and in Blender User Preferences have a look System and then Compute Device to see if CUDA is selected.

I do have the Nvidia-375 driver loaded. I used to have Cuda as an option when I first installed Linux Mint but now the option is no longer listed in User Preferences>System. I don't have any idea what could have caused this.

It does show the Nvidia driver as loaded. I wonder if I should blacklist the nouveau driver as I have read on the Ubuntu forums (although the problems they describe are total failure to load the Nvidia driver)?

I am considering this one solved, my problem is now fixed,; here's what I did.

I installed the NVIDIA 381 driver installing a PPA and using the driver manager using this method:

https://mintguide.org/system/779-instal ... -mint.html

The command line version I couldn't manage to get installed.

I then blacklisted the nouveau driver using this method:

https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/176

Blender could then see the driver but it still didn't list CUDA support in User Preferences until i started Blender from command line using the sudo command. At least it's working! Thanks to everyone who tried to help!
