Support for 4K Screens

Postby surrey10 » Mon Oct 23, 2017 12:56 pm

Hi,
I have been using Linuxmint initially as an alternate OS on my company laptop with a 4K Dell 28" monitor and it worked perfectly with Linuxmint 16 and 17 then I performed a kernel upgrade and found that I could only have a maximum resolution of 1920x1200, reverting to the standard kernel the resolutions were available. Using xrandr it only shows resolutions up to 1920x1080 for the HDMI connected monitor.
I believed incorrectly that there was a fault with the monitor where the higher resolutions were not available, but last week I tried with new Samsung 4K monitor but could only get 1920x1080 resolution
I built a dual boot desktop PC and connected the Dell screen via HDMI when running Windows 7 the screen would operate at 4K when running Linuxmint 18.2 it would only operate a 1920x1080.
Is there a bug in the EDID processing so that monitor resolutions are not being returned correctly?

What graphics card and driver are you using? Run this command on the terminal (a program in your menu) and share its output here. You can select and copy text from the terminal through its Edit menu.

Here is the output of inxi, xrandr and get-edid | parse-edid, so the edid is correctly reporting the display resolutions they are just not being made available.

Re: Support for 4K Screens

Postby ClixTrix » Tue Oct 24, 2017 4:12 pm

I see the resolutions aren't there.....apparently not detected. That video card should indeed support 4K HDMI.

I'm thinking that this might be the problem:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xr ... esolutions

BTW....did you update X.ORG and MESA at Update Manager? I recall doing that a few weeks back for a list of more advanced cards than the Cedar in my specs.

Edit: Oh, and use HDMI1 in place of VGA1 to troubleshoot. Hope that makes sense.

Edit2: If you are using both Display Port and HDMI, are there any possible RESTRICTIONS using dual monitors that might be involved? Have you tried just the HDMI only?

Edit3: Have you checked Bios for UMA Frame Buffer setting or similar that determines memory for GPU?

Re: Support for 4K Screens

Postby surrey10 » Wed Oct 25, 2017 11:38 am

All the 4K monitors I have access to are HDMI only (no access to Displayport or VGA monitors), this is something I noticed over a year ago I have been applying updates regularly (including Linuxmint release upgrades in order to address the problem), the reason I did not post earlier was I thought it was a monitor issue. I have applied the Mesa fix will be able to test tomorrow, though I am sure that I have applied previous updates without any change.
In respect of the BIOS, the settings remained unchanged from the time that the Dell 4K monitor used to work, I performed a bios update recently adding the A10 version but Bios settings did not changed.

I was asking about memory because it's unclear if RAM is being used for Video. Some motherboards have separate video RAM integrated. From your eariler post:

Processes: 236 Uptime: 14 min Memory: 1124.6/15950.7MB Init: systemd

I was thinking that 15950.7MB wouldn't include VRAM. Don't most of the 4K HD cards have/need 2-4 GB? Is there 16GB of RAM in the system?

Just trying to reason why the resolutions aren't showing.... is it because the video can't operate at the unseen due to restriction of some type, like insufficient memory.

I'm probably wrong, but it never hurts to ask.

Edit: I'm finding confusing info on the Radeon chip in that system. Specs are showing that the actual version of that Radeon HD 8790M chip (AMD FirePro W4170M referred as sibling to the 8790M) in the Precision M2800 only does standard HD (1920 x 1080), not 4K HD. I'm also seeing 2GB of video RAM.

https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-FireP ... 867.0.html

Edit2: Dell updated the VIDEO BIOS for that system with A02 back in 2014. Is it possible that update was to correct firmware that previously provided the higher resolutions on the chip, and that the original BIOS gave the 4K resolutions that were only appropriate to the full 8790M?

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/ ... erId=C0W1C

If you can remember when you flashed BIOS updates and whether you went to A02 or newer at a point where you lost 4K, that might be a working theory. I usually don't recommend BIOS updates without a reason, but there is the possible tie to the loss of 4K.

The ATI Radeon Card has 2GB dedicated memory.
The Mesa update did not make any change to how the external 4K HDMI monitors where handled.
There appears to an issue between the information collected via EDID and communication of this information to xrandr.

If you look at the output from EDID-Reader, it does indicate that the Dell monitor can perform 3840x2160 (4K HD).

Modeline "Mode 0" 297.00 3840 4016 4104 4400 2160 2168 2178 2250 +hsync +vsync

So does the Samsung.

Modeline "Mode 0" 297.00 3840 4016 4104 4400 2160 2168 2178 2250 +hsync +vsync

However, the output from xrandr is specific to query to the video card for resolutions it can support.

"When run without any option, xrandr shows the names of different outputs available on the system (LVDS, VGA-0, etc.) and resolutions available on each, with a * after the current one and a + after the preferred one :"

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xrandr

What initially had me confused was, I thought the chip was a high-end 8890M, not the dumb-down sibling W4170M, which is (apparently now) accurately reporting 1920x1080 for available resolution.

My best guess on why it initially supported full 4K is a bug in the Video BIOS that existed in A00 and A01, which you could try flashing back for test.

You could also try adding the 4K resolution in method on link I posted in my initial response. The Modeline is what I've echoed here.

Hi,

If you had read the first post, the Dell monitor at 4K did work successfully for around 18 months - two years then it stopped working after a kernel upgrade.
All that is required is to restore the previous functionality which was supported.

As the laptop is equipped with two graphics card (an Intel and ATI Radeon 8790M), I checked to see if there problems identifying the card.
The Xorg driver indicates it is using the OLAND driver for the ATI (see below). Is there full support for the 8790M?

Tried the Dell 4K screen on a Lenovo desktop PC with Linuxmint 18.2/Windows 7 installed and Linuxmint 18.2 was not able to drive 4K but Windows 7 did without issue (HDMI connections). xrandr appears not to identify graphics cards correctly as it limits the display to HD resolution only.
