Sound gone - unexpectedly
Suddenly, the sound is gone, and I have only one suspicion: the 10/29 update to linux-firmware to 1.157.13. I don't know if that's a reasonable suspicion, and if it is reasonable to suspect that, I do not know how to uninstall it and revert to the prior version. (1.157.11)
I don't know what else to look for.

Re: Sound gone - unexpectedly
If you think it is the firmware then you can uninstall it from within Synaptic package manager; Simply type linux-firmware into the search box, mark it for complete removal and apply. After doing that, download your preferred firmware from this link.
Start a terminal and
Just make sure you don't have more than one firmware package downloaded when you do that.
Start a terminal and
cd
into the download directory and issue this command:
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_*_all.deb

Re: Sound gone - unexpectedly
Hmm... thanks...
i am not too sure on my feet here, my only reason for suspecting that firmware version is because it is the last thing that happened BEFORE I lost the sound.
When I mark it for complete removal, it also wants to remove linux-kernel-generic and install a bunch of linux headers
quote
linux-firmware will be removed with configuration
linux-kernel-generic will be removed
linux-headers-4.8.0-53 (version 4.8.0-53.56~16.04.1) will be installed
linux-headers-4.8.0-53-generic (version 4.8.0-53.56~16.04.1) will be installed
linux-image-4.8.0-53-generic (version 4.8.0-53.56~16.04.1) will be installed
linux-image-extra-4.8.0-53-generic (version 4.8.0-53.56~16.04.1) will be installed
unquote
then what I found was the latest version prior to .13_all from 10/20 being _all from 3/26/16:
linux-firmware_1.157_all.deb 21-Mar-2016 23:53 31M
so I picked that one.
and proceded accordingly. I presume those other changes have to do with dependencies.
In any case, I turned back the clock here, and evidently, this was not the issue, for after restarting, I still had no sound. In short, I am going to let the 1.157.13 update go through next time, for it was NOT the problem. which leaves me with figuring out why my sound is suddenly not working.

Ref Firejail, no, no firejail running right now, nor recently. This change happened quite suddenly.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

- Press Enter.

What is a mystery, is how come these things got unstuck from the way they were set up...

Re: Sound gone - unexpectedly
Had a recent experience like this when I updated the kernel to 4.4.0-98 on Tuesday (Oct 31st along with all the other updates), the HDMI/Displayport audio stopped working, doesn't even show up in the sound control panel anymore just the spdif mobo output. Typing in commands lspci and lsmod showed differences in lsmod output. Tried backing up the Nvidia driver to the other shown in Driver Manager (wasn't the last driver used though), from 384.90 to offered 340.102 version and sound works correctly again. It appears maybe the 384.90 needs to be re-compiled with newest headers possibly?
