Cinnamon crashes due to new driver

Postby Leloup » Sun Nov 05, 2017 6:40 am

Bonjour,

Cinnamon crashes with the last 64 bit driver 384 for NVIDIA graphic card.
I did:

# apt-get purge nvidia.
# apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg
# apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
# killall Xorg

This is the same...

Do you have a little bit idea?

Regards,

Le loup

First check Secure Boot is disabled in your bios settings.

Purge nvidia packages:

Code: Select all

apt purge $(apt search ~invidia- -F %p | grep -v applet)

Update initrd:

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -u

Reboot then install Nvidia driver from Driver Manager. Reboot when done.

Bonjour Laurent,

Thank you for your proposal.
In fact, I badly taped the command lines. Then, I correctly taped them and that works. Cinnamon came back. Ouf!

Leloup

Laurent,

I have a question for you. You are a specialist. How to check the Xorg release? and How to upgrade it?

See command output :

Code: Select all

inxi -Gx

LM 18.2 supports xorg 1.18.4, do you have any problem with this release ?

michaou-VirtualBox ~ # inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card: InnoTek Systemberatung VirtualBox Graphics Adapter
bus-ID: 00:02.0
Display Server: X.org 1.18.4 drivers: (unloaded: fbdev) FAILED: vboxvideo
tty size: 80x24 Advanced Data: N/A for root

My issue is about driver. I tried the tuto of mpat https://forum-francophone-linuxmint.fr/viewtopic.php?p=28995#p28995
I tried with 384, 367, 340 release of driver....Cinnamon crashed each time.

I get also a warning in Terminal : No support for locale: fr_FR.utf8. I don't know if that is in relation with my driver issue.

Nvidia GPU can't work in a virtual machine.

Bonjour,

Comments with the pictures.
1. Before driver re-installation, desk was:
Bureau Cinnamon2.jpeg
Initial desk with error message
Bureau Cinnamon2.jpeg (19.64 KiB) Viewed 163 times

2. After driver re-installation,
When I say Cinnamon crashes I mean that I get a message and a new desk.
The message is
Cinnamon vient de planter.png
In English: Cinnamon crashed

Question in the message is: Do you want restart Cinnamon? I click NO.
The new desk is:
Nouveau Bureau2.jpeg
The new desk
Nouveau Bureau2.jpeg (22.33 KiB) Viewed 163 times

Why not keep this new desk? How to do to suppress the error message "Cinnamon vient de planter"?

Just a tip: You don't need to type the commands that someone gives you. You can copy and paste a command into Terminal.

There is an easy way to copy. See where this is above the command?
CODE: SELECT ALL

Click on SELECT ALL and it will select the command(s). You then can right-click on the selected command and click copy (or just use the keyboard with Ctrl+C)

Then paste the command into Terminal.

That way you can't make a mistake.
Don't forget to edit your original post and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the Subject line if your problem has been fixed.
My main language is English. I speak very little Portuguese, and a whole lot of gibberish.

1. Temperature tests before driver re-installation:

chanson avec Cinnamon2.jpeg
PC heats due to a simple video

Temperature meets more of 80°C and the fan speed is more than 2600 rpm

2. Temperature tests after driver re-installation:

ChauffeMoins2.jpeg
PC does not heat

In the same conditions, temperature meets only 65°C and the fan speed is less than 2200 rpm
The CPU activities is reduced. Why? While the GPU activities seems the same around 9% in both cases.
So, why not keep this new desk? I don't know its name. Can I suppress the error message?

Idea?

Leloup

You are running LM in a virtual machine, correct ? You are trying to install Nvidia driver in a virtual machine, this can't work. Remove Nvidia drver and use default VB driver

Thank you Laurent for your messages.

You are right. However, from my tests, you can see a clear improvement about temperature. PC does not heat. Desktop is different but I don't see any more modification. Applications are working. Question I have If Cinnamon crashed what is this new desktop? Is this still Cinnamon? It is a new picture with ices. Beautifully aspect. Isn't? Why not keep my desk in this state?
