USB 3 port on MSI 970 gaming

Postby lupo60 » Fri Nov 10, 2017 2:08 pm

hi all,

I've installed a new MSI 970 Gaming motherboard of my Linux box, due to a mobo failure, and from that moment on the USB 3 ports don't work anymore.
I suspect that the problem is due to a driver lack, so i tried to search drivers on MSI site but i found only windows driver.

So i don't know how to solve this problem.
I run on Mint 17.3 64 bit.

Can somebody help me ?

Any hint would be appreciated.

I assume you're meaning the motherboard rear ports and not front case ports.

Go to BIOS setup and check voltages are correct. Also, check that the USB 3.0 ports are enabled.

Did the old motherboard potentially die due to bad power supply? What is the make, model, and age of the PSU you're using?

Edit: I located your motherboard and USB 3.0 uses VIA VL806 Chipset for USB 3.0.

Looks like this is/was a known problem and possible fix:

Hi,

i tried to find the "IOMMU" setting in BIOS but i couldn't ... maybe you can help me.

I updated GRUB settings as suggested on the link provided but the problem is still there

I'm pretty sure that USB 3 ports work fine because my PC is in dual boot with win10 and on this system everything works fine, USB 3 ports too, both front and rear

thanks for any help

I downloaded and searched your MB Manual. IOMMU is on the bottom of page 3-16 in the Manual. It seems to be in the Overclocking section of Bios and looks (from screen shot) to be at the bottom of the page. Need to tab down the menu to bottom to find it.

Hi,

i found IOMMU settings in mobo, accepted values are disabled/64MB.
I tried to follow the procedure reported at the link provided but USB 3 is still not working.
Maybe installing Mint 18 could solve the problem ?

Thanks a lot

The last person on that other Forum post did make it work on Mint 18, so it's worth a try.

If you can't make it work, you could try an add-on card. I have one in my older office system using Mint 17.3 that works. It's chipset is NEC Renesas.
