Hi
I have connected a new Toshiba Canvio Basics 500 gb external hard drive.
It is mounting, and i have formatted it as ext4. But i can't drag and drop files from my pc.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: External HD drag and drop not working
Was the drive formatted while mounted? If so, use GParted and dismount and then format the drive ext4, remount, and test.
I know there can be a conflict in formatting a mounted drive. The conflict might be more common to previously formatted drive, e.g. FAT32.

Tried doing as you suggested, it's still the same. It doesn't state it is compatible with Linux https://www.scan.co.uk/products/500gb-t ... ack-pc-mac
but i presumed it would work when formatted.
Also right clicking the drive then selecting Permission. All the options are not changeable, also the Owner = root(root).
Re: External HD drag and drop not working
OK, now it makes sense. Can't write to it due to owner needs root permission. I don't think that drive needs USB driver, so I think that is the problem.inthosetrees wrote: also the Owner = root(root).
Any idea how that happened? I've done it accidentally doing sudo.
I know I've fixed it before, so looking for correct command. Found an example here:

It's working now. I followed the instructions from this website
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1334840
Worked a treat, used ZOOT7 advice.
Thanks for your help in this matter.

We've all done those "oops" at one time or another. Not really learning if you don't. I keep a VM test build around just so I can experiment and make a mess.
Glad I could help.
